Matters Initiated by Councilmembers

Item 8a
Reconsideration of Council's Decision to Deny the Application of
Spieker Partners (AP-91-6/Z-91-65) to Add Two Names to the Freeway
Pylon Siqn for Rose Pavilion. (SR91:478)

Mr. Peter Schnugg, Spieker Partners and developer of Rose
Pavilion thanked Council for reconsidering this application. He
commented that adding these names to the sign will help not only
Ethan Allen, but help all tenants in the Shopping Center in their
advertising.

Leigh Tats, also with Spieker Partners, indicated she deals
with prospective and existing tenants on a daily basis.
Prospective tenants are interested in how well the other tenants
are doing and where the customers are coming from. Ms. Tats uses
Ethan Allen and Galaxy 8 most often in terms of volumes of people
and distances traveled. She passed out the new brochures for the
Center, which has Ethan Allen and Galaxy 8 on the cover. She also
presented a petition signed by 100% of the tenants in favor of the
addition of the two names. The tenants would like to see Phases 1
and 2 united with Phase 3.

Mr. Tom Osborne, of Ethan Allen Gallery, read a letter from
Don McCreary, vice president of Gallery Operations of Ethan Allen.
He stressed the name Ethan Allen on the pylon sign would attract
people from the freeway into the Center. He cited other shopping
centers in the area and the number of signs approved for them.
Both those centers have visibility from the freeway and Phase 3 of
Rose Pavilion does not have that visibility. It therefore needs
the additional names for recognition.

Mr. Dale Davison of Galaxy 8 also spoke in favor of the
addition of two names on the pylon sign.

Mr. Gary Schwaegerle, 189 W. Angela Street, stated that he
supported the merchants in Rose Pavilion and felt there is a lack

11/19/91
10
