16

liked and he loved the history of the town. He felt that this is
the perfect area for this train. He stated that it would give the
younger people the chance to see what used to be a beautiful part
of America.

Howard Mendenhal, 1014 Benden Road, expressed'his support and
felt it would be a great contribution to the City. This is an
opportunity to attract people to this City that not one in a
hundred has. The train moves safely and very slowly and will only
run twice a month. He felt that the conflicts on this item
regarding traffic, funding, impacts on the City's parks, etc. could
be worked out.

Victor Baily, 4565 Railroad Avenue, was also in support. He
passed out pictures to the Council of examples of the San Jose
historical projects and of a steam train that revitalized a town in
Iowa. He felt there would not be any problem with congestion
because the train will only be going down that one track. He
indicated that the noise level would be low and the train would not
be running at 2:00 a.m. as they do at this time.

Bob Graham, 5550 Niles Canyon Road, was in support of the
train. He stated that several years ago he was the president of
the Downtown Association and at that time they presented the train
to the Council. The last five years have proven that their
railroad group has an excellent safety record. He stated that the
downtown needs some kind of identity to reach out to the people and
make money for the downtown businesses. People would travel from
all over to see this and it would even be more exciting to ride
one. He asked the Council to consider bringing this into our town.

Gerri Long, 4289 School Street, spoke in support of this
project. She felt that Pleasanton has balanced the old and the
new, which took a lot of people with great visions. In 1994 the
City will celebrate .its Centennial. She felt there would be no
better way to celebrate this event than to have the steam train
coming through the City. She felt that this would be a lot of fun
for the community and could enhance the business in the downtown
area.

Ms. Mohr asked Ms. Long what kind of businesses this had
brought to Sunol. Ms. Long was not aware of how much commerce
occurs there because of the train but did know that businesses in
Santa Cruz have been very successful due to the train there.

Ralph Anderson, 11787 Foothill Road, Sunol, expressed his
support of the train. He stated that currently there is too much
of an impact from people on Sunol and he would like to see the
unloading and loading of people in Pleasanton.

1/7/92
