83

Becky Dennis, 838 Grey Fox Circle, requested that Council
follow through on its commitment to pursue a Joint Powers Agreement
for the preservation of the Pleasanton Ridgelands with the City of
Hayward and Alameda County. She explained that Pleasanton
residents had made it clear of their desire to preserve the
ridgelands. She stated that the citizens where the Committee had
spoke with prior to the election thanked the Committee and wished
it luck. She said that the citizens offered their help when
needed. Ms. Dennis stated that the citizens are angry with
Council, with the exception of Ben Tarver. They feel that the
Council had been overly accommodating to the developers and to
people whose property is not located in Pleasanton. Residents
without financial ties to the Ridgelands development felt that
Council allowed them to be abused by Measure M's Ridgelands
Committee. She stated that those who had observed the Council
majority's support for the Ridgelands Committee and its product
(Measure K) felt that Council had betrayed their trust. They
understood the motivations of financially interested people and
recognized Measure K as a product of a Committee which these
interests controlled. Ms. Dennis believed that the voters thought
that Council owed them one and a JPA would be a good way to settle
accounts.

Mr. Tarver requested that this matter be placed on the next
City Council agenda for further discussion on entering
negotiations.

Ms. Von Garity, 1870 Tanglewood Way, supported Ms. Dennis'
comments and added that she was concerned that the City would
repeat the same mistake made by the Citizens' Committee. She said
future committee must not be overrun by individuals with a
financial interest in seeing the Ridgeland developed.

Brad Hirst, Centennial Committee, gave a report on the
progress of the Centennial Celebration and invited Council to
attend the dedication of the Del Valle Creek Trail Way at 6:00 p.m.
on June 25, 1992. The completion of this trail would not have been
possible without the support of Joe Elliott and Roger Higdon of the
Public Works Department and Dolores Bengtson of the Parks and
Community Services Department. The 17-member Steering Committee of
the Centennial Committee has completed the following projects: the
logo competition and selection, a school curriculum was written of
Pleasanton history and was tailored to each of the three school
levels which was funded by the Tri-Valley Fund, and the Del Valle
Creek completion. The Centennial logo will be the cover of the
Alameda County Home and Garden Show this October.

6/16/92 5
