59

Ms. Greer shared the same concerns that Mr. Bronzini had and
reiterated his comments. She supported Option D and felt that all
businesses would benefit from it. She referred to the staff report
and commented that street lights should be able to accommodate
banners for holidays. She concluded that all businesses have to
live with the decision made and requested Council's support of
Option D.

Brian Dutchover, 5579 San Antonio Street, encouraged Council
to support wider sidewalks and no flexible zone or diagonal
parking. He felt that the wider sidewalks would benefit the
businesses of downtown.

Dorothe Barlett, The Barlett Gallery, 163 W. Neal Street,
explained that she found various subjects in Option A, B, and C to
have aesthetic problems. She was opposed to loose granite in
pedestrian areas and rolled pavement. She appreciated all of the
work put into this project by the Task Force and other individuals.
She supported Option D and asked for Council to do the same.

Elisa Randazzo, 401 Main Street, was opposed to the flexible
zone and spoke in favor of Option D. She stated that the zone was
not the only issue that should be addressed and indicated that if
the merchants were wanting a high tech area to conduct their
businesses they would move to Hacienda Business Park or Stoneridge
Mall.

Bill Laube, 855 Main Street, indicated that the decision that
was to be made this evening was going to have to bring more
'business downtown. He supported diagonal parking because it
represented a friendly atmosphere and stated that the only threat
of danger would be from speeding vehicles. He strongly recommended
diagonal parking be included in which ever Option chosen.

Gary Schwaegerle, 189 W. Angela Street, was in favor of
diagonal parking and outdoor dining. He supported the Task
Force's recommendations. He was disappointed that Mayor Mercer and
Mr. Butler were unable to participate in this decision.

Robert Cordtz, 262 W. Angela, spoke in favor of Option D. He
was also disappointed that Mayor Mercer andMr. Butler were unable
to participate in this matter and felt that they were using the
.Amador Savings and Loan issue as a way to get out of the decision
to be made.

Peter MacDonald, President of Chamber of Commerce, stated that
the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors adopted a series of
positions on this item. He explained the process that the Board
took in adopting these positions. He pointed out that the Board
found that the merchants of downtown wanted wider sidewalks rather
than the flexible zone because more businesses could use them.

6/2/92 5
