40

Mr. Butler inquired if this was an adjunct to the budget
process for the Convention and Visitors Bureau. Mr. Mercer --
indicated this would be a one-time process to aid the economic well
being of the city. It is possible it may go to the Convention and
Visitors Bureau.

Mayor Mercer could not tell what the product would be, but
indicated the Panel might suggest ways to cut expenses or increase
revenues.

Ms. Mohr asked what format would be used: subcommittee
meetings or Council workshops? Mr. Mercer replied it could be
either. He stressed the City needs to be actively trying to pull
in business or perhaps changing the uses of some shopping centers.

Mr. Butler indicated he had no problem with the concept, but
wanted a better focus and direction as to the group. Mr. Mercer
responded that he did not want to structure the group, but to give
it some latitude. Mr. Tarver suggested that Council set a mission.

Ms. Scribner wanted to be sure the group did not get too
large. Mr. Mercer suggested five to seven people along with Bruce
Kern, who would help work with our staff.

Ms. Mohr indicated she would like to be a part of the
brainstorming process. Mayor Mercer indicated he would contact
Bruce Kern and suggested Ms. Mohr could be the Council liaison.

Ms. Acosta suggested Council make some suggestions on what to
look at, such as services and issues, etc. Mr. Mercer indicated
the City of Sunnyvale had done something like this and suggested
getting a copy of its plan.

Item 8b
Redevelopment Aqency Report

Mayor Mercer requested Council's permission to direct staff to
put together information as to a redevelopment agency to see if it
is still a viable alternative. Mr. Butler supported this
recommendation.

Item 8c
~an Francisco Propert~

Mayor Mercer indicated he had met with the Chairman of the San
Francisco Public Utility Commission, which is now the lead agency
regarding the property. The San Francisco representatives
indicated they would like to move ahead with the process according
to the schedule set by the City of Pleasanton and they are still in
agreement with the Agnos plan to start after the June 2nd election ....
Mayor Mercer indicated he would make the appointments to the
Steering Committee if Council concurred.

5/19/92 8
