154

Brian Dutchover thanked staff for its work in getting a
consensus on the design and agreed with Mr. Tung about having 10'
x 10' samples installed for inspection.

Don Mendez indicated that if the decomposed granite was used
around trees and on paths there could be a liability problem.
Lawnmowers could throw loose stones.

Sharon Hines expressed her concern about traffic circulation
in the downtown area. She believed there are problems now and
those should be corrected before any reconstruction is begun.

There was no further public testimony.

Mr. Tarver suggested going through the staff report
recommendations item by item and Mr. Iserson concurred.

Ms. Mahern inquired about the cost differences between
interlocking pavers and stamped concrete or regular sidewalks with
dust-on color. The approximate costs per square foot are $3.00 for
'regular sidewalk, $4.00 for sidewalk with dust-on color, and
roughly $6.00 for stamped or paving stones.

Ms. Mohr asked what the savings would be if the special
treatment was only at the corners without midblock sections. Mr.
Iserson speculated a savings of $50,000 and it is possible that
could be made up with a good bid. Ms. Mohr was concerned that the
City get what it wants downtown and not cut too many corners to
save money.

Mr. Iserson reiterated that the basic priorities should be set
at this time and cost cutting could occur later.

Ms. Scribner supported special paving material at
intersections and midblock crossings rather than the entire
sidewalk. She indicated attention should not be focussed on the
sidewalks but on the stores. She asked if it were necessary to
choose a color tonight. Mr. Tung indicated the priorities were the
important items; details could come later.

Mr. Tarver directed the meeting back to the staff
recommendations:

The general consensus was to use interlocking pavers at the
corners and midblock and a recommendation to have sample sections
for better viewing.

Tree grates were preferred. The style and color to be
selected later so long as the holes are 1/4 inch.

Ms. Mohr preferred the solid concrete benches.

11/3/92
- 4 -
