153

Convention and Visitors Bureau Presentation

Steve Hunter presented the "Buy a Brick" program. He
described the various materials that could be used to coordinate
with the selection for downtown pavers. He described programs used
in other locations for sale of the bricks to individuals, families
or organizations. There was discussion about putting the names on
the bricks on site or through the manufacturer. It is less
expensive to have the names applied at the factory. There was some
discussion about the location of the bricks and it was determined
to decide the location at a later date. At this point, the concept
was being presented for consideration.

The meeting was opened for public comment.

A1 Bronzini, on behalf of the Pleasanton Downtown Association,
indicated agreement with the recommendations in the staff report
and support for the Centennial Committee recommendation and the
Convention and Visitors Bureau proposal. He expressed appreciation
for all the hard work put into the project.

Peter MacDonald, President of the Chamber of Commerce, also
expressed appreciation for all of the hard work. He indicated the
Chamber is taking no position on the streetscape, however
everything presented appears to be within the parameters presented
to Council in July and August. He emphasized that the Chamber's
main concern is that the downtown have a pedestrian orientation
with seating areas. He also pointed out that there was some
discussion about the timing of the cross-town sewer improvements
and urged that it not happen at the same time as the downtown
reconstruction.

Dagmar Fulton, on behalf of the Historical Society, indicated
that many members of the Society have been long time residents of
Pleasanton and could have helped with the design if they had been
asked. She also pointed that there have been many different
proposals for the front of the museum. She was hopeful that the
low seating wall had been eliminated. She was concerned about
maintenance problems, security problems and monitoring the area.
She objected to the proposed chess tables. Ms. Fulton believed the
plan was wandering from historical accuracy of the area. She also
expressed concerns with transients loitering near the museum.

Mr. Iserson indicated that the design for the front of the
museum will come back to Council on November 17th. The only plans
under discussion now deal with the area from the sidewalk to the
curb.

Dorothy Barlett expressed her preference for the interlocking
pavers and strongly recommended dark charcoal gray as the color
instead of the mocha brown selected by the committee.

11/3/92
- 3 -
