152

Ms. Scribner inquired about the corner treatments at the
museum and why they are different. Mr. Iserson explained it was
because of the Foothill High School band parade requirements and
the Pleasanton sign.

Mr. Finch asked about garbage cans and newspaper racks. Mr.
Tung indicated garbage cans were not part of the scope of work. He
further stated that he could provide a catalog to show styles of
newspaper racks.

With regarding to decisions on cost saving measures, Mr. Tung
indicated vertical elements are more visible therefore costs should
be cut on flat work first. He suggested special paving at corners
only, removing cast iron tree grates and substituting decomposed
granite everywhere.

Ms. Scribner asked if any provision had been made for planting
ground cover or flowers in front of the museum or was it just to be
all lawn. Mr. Tung indicated various plantings could be done, but
it was a question of budget and maintenance.

Ms. Mahern asked about the standard concrete sidewalk with
dust-on hardener. Mr. Tung indicated the cost was the same as the
stamped concrete. The dust-on process makes the standard concrete
denser and longer wearing, although there is less texture.

Centennial Committee Presentation

Brad Hirst and Jan Batcheller presented slides showing
examples of the tile art of Mr. Granizio. The Centennial Committee
proposes to commission a major piece for the Centennial Celebration
and to have twelve to fourteen smaller pieces located in various
places downtown, such as along the sidewalks. The vertical piece
is suggested for Vervais Park, Civic Park or near the museum. The
smaller pieces would be vignettes of Pleasanton history and would
be sponsored by various groups. These would be good for school
outings and as points of interest for downtown shoppers. Posters
of the artwork could be sold as fundraisers.

Ms. Mohr suggested placing a major piece near the Pleasanton
Hotel at the bridge. It was pointed out that the piece should be
in a location where people can congregate to view it or where there
is seating, such as in a park.

There was discussion about the wear and maintenance of the
tile. Mr. Hirst explained that the tile can be coated with
solutions that make it wear better than the sidewalk and removes
any problems of being slippery when wet.

11/3/92
- 2 -
