167

Mayor Tarver preferred preserving the existing bridge. He felt that there are alternatives
to removing the bridge if the community wants to do so.

Ms. Dennis suggested designating the bridge historical and should it ever neerill~ to be
removed, it will be moved to another location in Pleasanton.

Mr. Pico felt that if the bridge is named as a landmark then it should be preserved in its
present location. I-Ie agreed that it should be saved.

There was discussion about the realignment of Bemal Avenue and the existing bridge.

Mr. Swift indicated that staff can provide new drawing to reflect Council' s desire for the
bridge. Staff will report to the Council with a new drawing of the structural elements, as well
as the alignment of the road. Alignment 1 is the best alternative. Any future widening of the
road will be reviewed by Council.

Mr. Summers recommended Alignment B1 (Page 7 of the staff report) be adopted. He
felt this would accomplish the short term as well as for the long term goals. This alignment
would allow the existing bridge to remain, approve a new two lane bridge at this time on an
alignment that was acceptable by the Council, and also allows for expansion, if needed. He
asked for confirmation on the existing alignment because the construction of the project is being
delayed.

It was moved by Ms. Mohr, and seconded by Ms. Scribner, approving Alternative
Alignment No. 1, Interim (2-lane Concrete Bridge with Future Widening to the South).

The roll call vote was as follows:
AYES: Councilmembers Dennis, Mohr, Pico, Scribner and Mayor Tarver
NOES: None
ABSENT: None
ABSTAIN: None

It was moved by Mr. Pico, and seconded by Ms. Dennis, that Resolution No. 93-97, be
adopted, adopting a policy to preserve the Bemal Avenue Bridge and requesting the General Plan
Review Committee to consider adding language naming the bridge a historical landmark in the
General Plan.

The roll call vote was as follows:
AYES: Councilmembers Dennis, Mohr, Pico, Scribner and Mayor Tarver
NOES: None
ABSENT: None
ABSTAIN: None

07/20/93 11
