67

The following citizens spoke in support of this item: Bruce McFarlane, 3825 Stanford
Way, Livermore; John Yee, M.D., Lung Specialist, 5565 W. Las Positas Boulevard; and
Thurmon Caudill, 4715-B Augustine Street.

Richard Flores, 1531 Merritt Lane, Livermore (a packet was given to Council), spoke
in support of the proposed ordinance. He, as a restaurant owner, shared the same concern as
Ms. Mohr indicated. Mr. Flores spoke about the danger that secondhand smoke presented as
well as smoking in general. He felt that most of the restaurant owners in Pleasanton would
support removing the vending machines as well.

Shelby Martin, Executive Director of the Chamber of Commerce, 777 Peters Avenue,
did not support this ordinance. The members of the Chamber of Commerce were interested in
allowing smoking in bars, at Alameda County facilities, and that school district facilities be
considered separately. The Chamber also recommends that hotels have separate floors or wings
for smokers and to increase the percentage of rooms allowing smoking.

Guy Hensley, 973 Clinton, General Manager of Pleasanton Hilton, indicated that the
percentage of smoking rooms has dropped in the last few years. He felt that Council should be
careful in setting a percentage because it is possible that it will change in the future to perhaps
90%-non smoking and 10%-smoking. He supported the ordinance if other cities pass the same
ordinance. It is imperative that customers are not pushed out of this community.

Mary Blackwell, representing the Pleasanton Sheraton, 5115 Hopyard Road, spoke in
support of a smoke-free environment. She was hoping that the ordinance language could be
changed to address reasonable distance and enforcement. She did not object to the concept or
the need for this type of ordinance.

Robert Cordtz, 262 W. Angela, owner of Plumtree Inn, spoke in support of this
ordinance. He questioned the enforcement at the Alameda County Fairgrounds.

Mike Raasch, 2639 Calle Reynoso, General Manager, Buttercup Pantry, spoke in support
of this ordinance but was concerned that other communities will not support this type of
ordinance.

Sarena Chen, American Lung Association of Alameda County, 295 - 27th Street,
Oakland, was pleased that Pleasanton was considered this ordinance and offered her support to
help implement the ordinance. (A handout was given to Council).

, represented the Pleasanton Holiday Inn, was not in opposition to this
ordinance but recommended that Council should consider the following: the length of time that
it would take to convert smoking rooms to non-smoking; that 25 % of hotels/motels rooms permit
smoking and 75% be smoke free by the end of 1994; permit smoking and non-smoking rooms
be located on the same floors in separate sections; hotels should post signs to inform guests that
smoking is only permitted in designated areas.

10/12/93 5
