Ms. Acosta mentioned how important it was for people to give accurate information for <br />the 2000 Census count. The Census count provides a basis for the number of seats in the United <br />States House of Representatives and an allocation of Federal, State, and County funds for social <br />and other programs. The Census is used to determine where to locate roads, schools, day care <br />centers, senior citizen centers, hospitals, and other facilities. <br /> <br /> Ms. Dennis agreed that it was important to give accurate information. <br /> <br />5. MEETING OPEN TO THE PUBLIC <br /> <br /> Terry Edwards, 5793 Via Peralta, gave an update on some of the activities that theYouth <br />Commission is participating in. He mentioned the Youth Day car show in conjunction with the <br />Good Guys Hot Rod Association and presented photos of the event. He said a local sponsor, <br />Mike Madden, Madden Charities Inc., donated $1800 towards the car show project to purchase <br />T-shins for all the event participants. Other sponsors were Specialty Sales, who donated $300; <br />Tri-Valley Buick/Pontiac/GMC, who donated $600; and Steve's Exxon, who donated $300. He <br />wanted to thank Mike Collins of the Pleasanton Police Department for his participation in a <br />special promotion event held on March 27, 1999. He presented Council with a copy of the Good <br />Guys Gazette magazine that is distributed worldwide and referred to page 88, which had an <br />article about Youth Day. He said the Youth Commission has been very active and is planning <br />many events for the future. <br /> <br /> Brian Arkin, 3740 Newton Way, asked Council to investigate purchasing the Bemal <br />property and if the matter could be agendized. He also asked if repairs could be made to the PA <br />system in the chambers because of static near the back. <br /> <br /> Ms. Acosta explained the process in order to agendize the Bemal property item. <br /> <br /> Ms. Michelotti mentioned she has received phone calls regarding the City's purchase of <br />the Bemal property. <br /> <br /> Rick Picketing, General Manager of the Alameda County Fairgrounds, 4501 Pleasanton <br />Avenue, gave an update on the 1999 Fair activities. He indicated many meetings were held <br />regarding the events that happened last year during the Fair. Three key recommendations were <br />made: 1) no fireworks on the Fourth of July; 2) close the Fair between 6:00 and 6:30 p.m. on the <br />Fourth of July; and 3) institute full metal detection. He said the goal is to implement these <br />recommendations on a pilot basis only and then evaluate the effectiveness of these changes and <br />make permanent recommendations for the year 2000. He mentioned that negotiations are being <br />held with the Oakland A's and other sponsors to hold a free fireworks show at the Coliseum.
