Mr. Churka felt the historic train would eventually get to Spring Street and he believed
government agencies don't like to pull something out that may go back in later. That is why
the rails are still there.

Ms. Mohr indicated the City had received a large grant from the railroad to replace those
five crossings. The City took money for two of them and left the others undecided. She would
like to see if it is possible to get the railroad to come back and finish the street crossings.

Mr. Churka indicated there is one block of track that will be finished at the end of this
year. The street crossings at West Angela and West Neal Street are now attached to a block of
train tracks which he just put in. He hopes to run train rides on that stretch as fund raisers for
the Railroad Association.

Ms. Michelotti commented that this trail will link Castlewood with the downtown area.
Her understanding is that the funding will cover from Junipero to Bernal. What picks up the
trail to get it down to Castlewood.

Mr. Lure stated that when the report was initially drafted it was understood that the plans
for the path were longer than they now are. There is no funding for that portion of it.

Ms. Michelotti asked if there is any idea how that might be accomplished.

Mr. Churka stated that anything south of Junipero has a major sloping problem and to
be able to construct anything in there besides the tracks is major work and there are no funds
for that work.

Ms. Michelotti stated she had supported the project to bring the train up Niles Canyon
from Sunol to Pleasanton. She saw problems concerning the Senior Center and where the train
stops. Whether the train continues to the downtown area will have to be addressed by the initial
studies. She was pleased the loan was for $10,000, but wanted repayment of the loan, if at all
possible. She looked forward to the plans in the future and felt it can be an asset to the
community.

Ms. Acosta clarified that the $10,000 that has been spent was only to date. She would
not anticipate that this would end at only $10,000, but will not exceed $30,000.

There being no further testimony, Mr. Tarver declared the public hearing closed.

It was moved by Councilmember Pico, and seconded by Councilmember Dennis, to adopt
Resolution No. 95-138, supporting the Alameda County application for funds for the
transportation enhancement activities program, funding the Pleasanton Railroad Association
Historic Railroad Corridor Preservation Project on the Alameda County transportation corridor
fight-of-way between the south side of Bernal Avenue and Sunol.

11/28/95 -6-
