Mr. Hadlock indicated his point was that community parks are more important
than private parks.

Item 7a
Approval of Southwest Corner of Sports Park for a Skateboard Track Site
(SR95:83)

Dolores Bengtson presented the staff report.

Ms. Mohr asked for clarification of "demonstration project."

Ms. Bengtson explained that this is to demonstrate that the facility is a good project
and will work well in the Sports Park.

Tadashi Yamaoda, 3405 Byron Court, believed this was a good location for the
track because of its central location and proximity to a bus stop.

Michael Estes, 3375 Norton Way #8, and David Kimberling, 2006 Raven Road,
also spoke in support of the project.

Jane Bountis-Berthet, 1103 Autun~n Court, indicated she was initially skeptical of
this sport. Since her son has been involved, she has met other skateboarders and is very
impressed with the dedication, practice and skill involved in the sport. She referred to
citations for skateboarding in unauthorized areas and was happy that the City supported
this facility, since the City supports other sports such as soccer and softball.

Ms. Dennis expressed her appreciation for all the time and effort of the young
people in contributing to the design of the facility.

Ms. Mohr indicated this idea first came up nearly ten years ago, when government
agencies were having an insurance crisis and there was a reluctance to approve anything
with risk involved. The persistence of the young people and a change in the law has
allowed the city to proceed with the project.

Mr. Tarver also commended the participation of the young people and urged them
to stay involved.

03/07/95 - 6 -
