Ms. Michelotti said the staff report alludes to the fact when he asked for the change from
wood to metal windows, there would still be trim around the windows.

Mr. Churka said another reason he went with the metal windows is to support the Planning
Departments issue in having a considerable number of windows in the front. With the number of
windows put in, the space was limited for molding. He said if the City wanted fewer windows the
molding could be wider. He figured the 4x6 windows worked well and helped to accomplish what
the City wanted.

Ms. Michelotti said there must have been a miscommunicationbetween the City and him in
regards to the molding. She understood that when molding is set a sash window, it does not reach
right to the edge.

Mr. Churka said the molding did not appeal to him.

Ms. Michelotti said staff was expecting the sash part of the window to be metal but there
would still be trim around the outside.

Mr. Churka said he installed the same window that was approved by the Planning
Department.

Mayor Tarver read from the staff report that staff approved the change about the color, in
addition the approved plan specifies that wood frames would be used on the building. The
applicant requested to change the window frame material from the approved wood to aluminum.
Staff allowed the applicant to make this change believing that wood sills and trim would still be
installed around the window frames. He asked if the window frame that was installed is the
window frame that was presented to staff.

Mr. Swift said staff understood the change Mr. Churka wanted to make from a wood
window to a metal window, but felt the trim around the windows would remain.

Ms. Dennis understood the windowsills are more problematic than the trim to install.

Mr. Swift said the trim that is integral to the window solves the problem that a sill is
designed to do, which is to allow water to escape from the window and not let it run into the
building. A tree sill could not be replaced in the windows installed, but molding could be applied
below the window. The window does have a narrow sill.

Ms. Dennis asked if the lap siding was wood or aluminum?

Mr. Swift said it is wood.

Pleasanton City Council 16 04/6/99
Minutes
