Ms. Ayala asked, when the applicant asked to change the frame color to match the dark
forest green trim color, wouldn't that imply that the applicant knew there was going to be trim?

Mr. Swift said as part of the overall misunderstanding, Mr. Churka's idea of the trim is what
is now on the windows.

Robert Comstock, 4475 Entrada Drive, said when he moved to Pleasanton he received a
very warm welcome, mainly from the Churkas. He is looking forward to the opening of the Coffee
Roast. He was mystified with the issue regarding the window trim. He thought the windows
looked great. He wanted to express his support for the project.

John "Jack" Dove, 3263 Vineyard Avenue, #114, said he attended the design committee
meeting of the Downtown Pleasanton Association and reported that the general feeling is that
everyone would like the project completed as quickly as possible. The main concem is the parking
being blocked off on Main Street in the front of the project and the fencing on the sidewalk. He
suggested that the exterior work to the from of the building be completed in 30 - 60 days to allow
for the parking to be restored and the fencing to be removed. He described the different houses on
First Street that have several different colors and articulation around the windows that look
wonderful. He said there is one window on the street that does not have any trim that looks terrible.
What would be wrong with leaving the windows the way they are on the project?

Debra Barker, 5081 Blackbird Way, understood all the conditions approved by the Planning
Commission are now open to discussion. She did not understand why this appeal was being heard.
The issue is over 1¼ inch. It is purely an aesthetic issue. If people drive by the building and find it
appealing, then what is the issue? She found the building quite appealing. She supported the
enclosed patio because it will allow parents to relax over a cup of coffee/food without having to
worry about their children darting out onto a busy street. She appreciated the Churkas for bringing
life back to the downtown area. She feels that the Churkas have excellent business sense and that
the City should allow successful business owners to build what they need for success.

Dr. Curtis Hall, 397 Ray Street, #203, said it is a beautiful building and would like to see it
opened as soon as possible. He would like the fences removed from the sidewalk and the parking
restored on the street. He did not understand why the issue was being brought up at this time. He
asked for a show of hands that supported opening the Coffee Roast.

There were several hands raised from the audience.

Mr. Hovingh said apparently there was a misunderstanding between the staff and the
applicant. He also would like the building open as soon as possible.

Mayor Tarver asked if the building was secured so the fence could be removed.

Pleasanton City Council 17 04/6/99
Minutes
