Mr. Lum said the cost for Cameron would come back to Council as well as if there were
any differences in the neighborhood as to what it would like.

6, PUBLIC HEARIN0$ AND OTHER MATYER$

Item 6a
Presentation of Library_ Study regarding service alternatives. (SR97:300)

Steven Bocian presented the staff report.

Linda Wood, County Librarian, 2450 Stevenson Blvd, Fremont, gave a brief report on
the services the County offers through the library system. She hoped the City would choose tO
remain part of the Alameda County Library system. She believed the major negative impact
would be lack of access to the County Library resources.

Ms. Ayala asked if at one time all the cities within Alameda County were in the Alameda
County Library system?

Ms. Wood said no. The oldest cities, such as Oakland and Berkeley, were never part
of the County library system.

Ms. Ayala asked what the maximum number of cities were that participated.

Ms. Wood said when the system began it served unincorporated areas. Gradually, over
time, cities in the south County incorporated. The library law allows the Board of Supervisors
to establish a library to serve the unincorporated area and any city that wishes to be a member.

Mayor Tarvet said the report showed the book mobile as being constant, but he had
heard that is not the case.

Ms. Acosta said the book mobile was not in the consultant's report.

Mr. Bocian said it was added in to show the cost the City is paying for the service. He
mentioned members of the Library Commission were present to answer questions.

Ms. Acosta said Pleasanton has a win-win choice. The decision will be based on the best
partnership for the future. The County of Alameda has responded quite well over the last few
years in addressing the concerns of the City. Staff is not quite prepared to give a
recommendation which is why this report was presented tonight.

Angelina Summers, 4750 Sutter Gate Avenue, asked if David Griffith's work was
completed.

Pleasanton City Council 10/07/97
Minutes 5
