6. PUBLIC HEARINGS AND OTHER MATTERS

Item 6b
Review of Cameron and Martin Avenue Sidewalk Project No, 978064, (SR97:256)

Randall Lum presented the staff report.

Mayor Tarver asked for public input.

Janice Cain, 2033 Paimer Drive, spoke in support of a paved path to have access to the
rear of Mohr Elementary School. She wanted to ride with her daughter to the school, but
traffic is a concern on Cameron. She understands the Cameron residents' desire to preserve the
rural atmosphere, but she believes the path will not affect that. She reviewed various routes to
the school and indicated the best way for her daughter and many other children was along
Cameron to Martin. She also supported widening Cameron to add a bike lane, and putting in
some kind of crosswalk.

Kelly Cousins, 3736 Cameron, believed there was a lot of fast moving traffic on
Cameron and putting in a path will draw more children to the area. She suggested closing the
street or making it one way. She had previously submitted a petition from residents who wanted
some restrictions on traffic. She was also concerned about future development on the Busch
property with turn restrictions on Kamp off Mohr. She was concerned about the safety of the
children and possible liability to the residents. She agreed with improvements on Martin, but
wanted other types of traffic controls on Cameron. In addition, she supported widening
Cameron with a bike lane, but until that is done, traffic should be restricted from going into that

Ms. Michelotti pointed out that the agenda does not include consideration of widening
Cameron and no decision can be made tonight on that issue.

Ms. Acosta explained that a process is under way to bring back traffic calming
recommendations in this area for Council consideration.

Kris Jarvis, 1980 Palmer Drive, pointed out that 465 children will be attending Mohr
Elementary and 116 will be using the proposed bike path. She explained other routes and the
reasons this path is the best for those students. She supported trimming foliage on the existing
trees and urged Council to proceed as soon as possible on this project.

Mark Avon, 1992 Martin Avenue, supported the previous speakers and indicated the
safety of the children is the main issue. He said there is a fence next to the Kaiser property and
did not see why an additional fence was necessary. He supported the three-way stop at Cameron
and Martin, widening Cameron, and a bike lane on the north side. He urged Council to approve
this.

Pleasanton City Council 08/26/97
Minutes 5
