of taken place. She felt she should be able to protect her family. She urged Council to oppose
the ordinance and spend more time on punishing the criminals. She urged Council not to take
away the opportunity for the people to protect themselves.

Bernette Griffin, Pleasanton, opposed the ordinance. He did not believe this ordinance
would solve anything. There are young people that live on the streets and have no family
values. He urged Council to vote no.

Luana Layton, 4260 First Street, Livermore, appreciated the opportunity to speak today.
Her work has led her to believe that if somebody wanted a gun they will get a gun. The
ordinance only applies to law abiding citizens. Livermore voted the gun ban in. She said she
is going to buy a gun and would like it to be a gun of choice. She would like to buy a gun from
someone that she trusted. She felt gun dealers would not sell her a gun that would blow up in
her face. If this ordinance passes, she would not be able to afford a gun from a respectable
dealer. She agreed with the family issue. She said politicians carry concealed weapons. Are
their lives more important than hers? She ended with a quote, "Among the many misdeeds of
the British rule in India, history will look upon the act of depriving a whole nation of arms as
the blackest."

The following did not wish to speak but wanted their name read for the record:

Dorothy Spence, 2284 Goldcrest
Doris Hale Slater, 1987 Paseo Del Cajou
Vie Pelton, 1456 Calle Enrique
Mavis Winefeldt, 3432 Beecham Court
Bing Hadley, 1210 Hearst Drive
Christine Apostoli, 4476 Denker Dr
Mary & Lloyd Hanson, 4082 Peregrine Way
R. Jo Molz, 7580 Driftwood Way
Werla Becker, 1571 Calle Enrique
Jack Hovingh, 4250 Muirwood Drive

Mayor Tarver closed the public hearing.

Ms. Dennis asked what the policy was for disposal of the guns and was there a policy
regarding the type of weapon retired police officers are allowed to carry?

Mr. Eastman said the weapons are destroyed and there is a very restrictive policy as to
the weapons carried by retired police officers.

Mr. Pico asked the Chief of Police if he supported this ordinance.

Pleasanton City Council 07/12/97
Minutes 10
