Bernal Adobe Special Event~ Center
Appeal of the Planning Commission's denial of an application for a conditional use permit
to allow the establishment of a special events/conferenCe center within the Bernal Adobe
located at 1780 Foothill Road. Zoning for the property is PUD (Planned Unit Development)
- LDR (Low Density Residential) District. (SR97: 178)

Brian Swift presented the staff reports.

Ms. Dennis asked if there were an alternate use?

Mr. Swift said the Planning Commission initiated a zoning change and asked the staff to
come back with alternate uses that would be more acceptable for the neighborhood.

Mr. Pico asked if this structure were classified as historical?

Mr. Swift said no, it was not, according to the State requirements. However, Pleasanton
has the adobe listed in its General Plan as historical.

Mr. Pico asked if the appeal is denied what uses would be allowed? Would staff only
be looking at residential uses?

Mr. Swift said under the current PUD, LDR was the only use allowed. Staff would need
to follow up on the Planning Commission' s initiation of a modification to create other allowable
uses. But residential would probably be in the lead.

Patrick Curfin, 8015 Foothill Road, representing the applicant/appellant, said he did not
expect Council to overturn the Planning Commission decision. He said there are no viable
commercial uses that would not raise concerns. He was here this evening to ask Council to
return the Bernal Adobe back into a residence.

Mayor Tarver said that it would of been easier to take that approach rather than bring
the public to the Planning Commission meeting and the Council meeting.

Pleasanton City Council 6/17/97
Minutes 13
