Ms. Ayala introduced him to the Stewart Gary, the Fire Chief, and suggested they have
a conversation regarding his concerns.

Mayor Tarvet said the process is to notify affected property owners that the City believes
there is a problem and ask them to correct it. If the problem is not corrected, the City will take
care of it and then will bill the property owner.

Ms. Acosta said Chief Gary would look at Mr. Jones' concerns.

Mr. Gary said the City is only asking for the properties to be fire safe.

Ms. Michelotti said she understood that Mr. Jones has taken care of the problem.

Ms. Dennis suggested to staff that perhaps the language of the letter could be reworded.
She also asked why the list showed properties owned by the City.

Mr. Gary said the list is a master list from the Assessor and owners of all the affected
properties are notified. He said he would work with the City Attorney on the language of the
letter.

Kent Pryor, 3425 Bernal Avenue, said he would like to request changes to the weed
abatement standards. He requested the definitions be more precise and that fewer of the weed
abatement decisions be based on subjective inspections. He gave suggestions for changes in the
policy and would like to work with the Fire Department on the details.

Mr. Gary said Alameda County has a contract with the City for fire protection in
unincoporated areas and the fire code and weed abatement procedures both are enforced in the
immediate areas adjacent to the City. He said he appreciated Mr. Pryor's comments and would
welcome his help on next year's program.

Ms. Dennis asked how the issue of living trees and shrubs were handled in creating fire
breaks.

Mr. Gary said only the dead material would be removed. It is a very complicated
process and the Fire Inspectors will work closely with the property owners to ease any burdens.

Mayor Tarver commented the policy is to keep properties fire safe and he did not feel
residents would object to keeping their properties fire safe.

There being no further public testimony, the public heating was closed.

Pleasanton City Council 06/03/97
Minutes 7
