Ms. Dennis asked how many students/families are at the current center?

Mr. Bernstein said approximately 180 children from 150 families.

Mayor Tarver asked for a show of hands of those in the audience who just don't want
the school in the neighborhood.

(There were many.)

Robert Harding, 3804 Stone Pointe Way, had a number of issues that he wanted to bring
before Council. He asked for staff to clarify if the left turn lane would be a problem. He said
the 200 students was something the residents agreed upon. There are many concerns regarding
traffic. He said the residents he represented would like to know what the benefit is by putting
in this school. The main issue is the will of the people not wanting this school. The residents
do not feel this is an appropriate use of the land. Mr. Harding showed slides regarding the
street and the problems that would arise if this project were approved. He said the church down
the street is also planning on putting in a school sometime in the near future.

Mayor Tarver restated Mr. Harding's concerns and asked for a show of hands by those
who just do not want the school in their area due to safety issues, traffic issues, three schools
within a small radius, and access.

(Again there were many.)

Bill Wheeler, 2958 Garden Creek, was concerned about safety. Parents' speeding before
or after work to pick up their child/children would endanger the other pedestrians in the area.
Property values will go down. There is a brand new elementary school being built down the
street and there was no economic need for this project to be built.

Matt Clauson, 3865 Stone Pointe Way, did not feel the traffic issues had been properly
addressed. With two other schools possibly being built within close proximity, why does the
neighborhood need another school? He asked about the Councilmember who at one time had
children at an ELI facility.

Ms. Dennis commented she at one time had her children at ELI but that was over three
years ago.

Mr. Roush said there was no conflict of interest for Ms. Dennis.

Mr. Clauson commented that it would affect the decision and that Council cannot make
a good decision when none of the Councilmembers live within the area being talked about.

Pleasanton City Council 7 3/18/97
Minutes
