Ms. Dennis would like to see a cooperative effort done to introduce the children to the
programs and the performers to the community, such as holding performances at the schools.
She also wanted to know if this program included any opportunity for comedy programs.

Ms. Tenbrink agreed that the information needs to get to the community.

Ms. Michelotti suggested using a kiosk or billboard and felt the educational process is
worthwhile.

Ms. Tenbrink said this program allows for change and growth. She announced the Civic
Arts Commission meets the first Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m.

Mayor Tarver asked for public input.

Rudy Johnson, 5655 Black Avenue, Vice Chair of the Civic Arts Commission, said he
would not be afraid to ask Council for more money. He felt the work the Commission was
doing was very important. He said there is interest from the businesses in the community to see
the Commission do a better job in the cultural area. Arts programs are a good investment.

Charlotte Severin, President of the Art League, 4513 Mirador Drive, supported the
cultural plan and urged Council to support the plan. She felt the plan represented careful
research and broad spectrum of the cultural needs for the community. She said there is a critical
need for gallery space and facilities to hold art shows, classes and workshops. She presented
photographs of the overcrowding at various shows and workshops. She said for the cultural plan
to be effective it needs a funding base. She strongly recommended using a percentage of the
hotel tax to support the arts. She felt this was appropriate because the arts enhances the life of
the community. She asked for a show of hands of those in the audience that supported the
cultural plan.

There was a large number of hands raised.

John Loll, 4788 Peaceful Lane, supported the cultural arts plan. As a citizen he felt it
was important to support the arts in the community. He felt it was important to encourage the
display of arts and to provide young people with the opportunity to participate in arts. He asked
Council to adopt the cultural plan and use the long range objectives in the document to move
forward in improving the arts in the community. He agreed there is a great need for facilities
to display art and provide financial and technical assistant to this program.

There were no other speakers on this item.

It was moved by Ms. Dennis, and seconded by Ms. Ayala, to adopt Resolution No.
98-159 approving the Cultural Plan.
The roll call vote was as follows:

Pleasanton City Council 17 12/01/98
Minutes
