the West Las Positas interchange. He did not understand why the City should let this happen.
He felt the developers interest should not be put in front of the residents. He said the City is
going to end up with gridlock on the neighboring freeways and no money to have any mitigation
measures take place. He said the City has to stop shutting its eyes to the data and statistics.
The 7 million square feet in approved development will increase traffic by 46 percent. He stood
at Hopyard and 1-580 during rush hour and saw bumper to bumper traffic. He said people
choose Pleasanton to be their home. He urged Council to actively listen during the September
15 presentation and do something to alleviate the problem. He urged the public to comment.

Brian Arkin, 3740 Newton Way, had read in the newspapers the plan to build theaters
and a shopping center near the BART station. He submitted pictures of a shopping center
complex in Thousand Oaks that had outstanding t~atures and characteristics. He asked for any
similar construction being done be architecturally enhancing.

Ms. Michelotti said the pictures were excellent and that the San Francisco property
would be a perfect place for something similar.

Ms. Ayala said the theaters are being developed by the City of Dublin.

Carole Varela, 3858 Mohr Avenue, reiterated the events that happened during the
Ponderosa referendum and how it affected her health. She was disappointed that the East Side
Plan did not include the Staples Ranch development or the Stoneridge Drive extension. She said
the makeup of the committee will consist of three developers and ten residents hand picked and
favored by the majority Councilwomen. She feels the committee will be in favor of Ponderosa
Homes and that the Council had forgotten what happened. The residents have not forgotten.
The people voted for the three Councilwomen because they favored slow growth but their voting
records show different actions. She listed several things that happened during the referendum
process that could have been avoided when the women were in charge. She also did not
appreciate the reappointment of Nate Meeks to the Economic Vitality Commission.

Steve Belecky, 3644 Kamp Drive, thanked Council for serving the late nights for little
or nothing. He also reiterated what happened during the referendum process. The people on
the east side do not support the current plans that the City has for growth. The east side has
shown that it does not want Stoneridge Drive to cut through to Livermore. The residents feel
they are not being respected. He would like Stoneridge Drive and Staples Ranch included in the
study. He said unless the City changes its mind to include all the areas there will be another
referendum. He said if anyone is interested in joining the referendum process to call "Preserve
Our Pleasanton" at 462-1187.

Ms. Michelotti asked if he was advocating that Stoneridge Drive not get connected to E1
Charro.

Pleasanton City Council 8 09/01/98
Minutes
