The roll call vote was as follows:
AYES: Boardmembers - Gunson, Kernan, McGovern, and President Haugen.
NOES: None
ABSENT: Boardmember Bassett
ABSTAIN: None

2. Status of After-School Child Care Survey

Kay Ayala presented the staff report.

Eileen Morley gave a brief background and results of the school age care resident's
survey. She said the consulting firm of Corey, Canapary and Galanis was hired and completed
a 404 resident contact for the School-Age Care survey. She said the sample draft survey results
have just been received and the Task Force Committee will be looking at those results and hope
to have a completed report by July. The survey itself targeted families who currently have
children in K through Fifth grade and children who will be in Kindergarten in the next one to
two years. The survey is a tool that will help identify the strategy that will meet the current
needs or future needs.

Patrick Kernan said many of the houses in the community are dual working parents and
need day care everyday and this is compounded when a child gets sick. He said the Tri-Valley
Business Council is trying to find out whether employers would be willing to subsidize and
contribute as a benefit to its employees a plan combined with Valley Care Community Health
Center that would provide a place for sick children during the day. He said this is a good
example of how to combine the many resources in the community when there is a goal and a
driven plan.

Ms. Haugen said Valley Community Health Center did try and set up a child drop off,
but it did not succeed, but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be tried again. She also suggested
collaborating with the hospital as a way to provide care also for those that cannot afford it.

Ms. McGovern said Ellen Tauscher is also looking at childcare issues at a national level.
She said there are some good ideas in the Bill that Ms. Tauscher is bringing forward about
giving assistance to businesses if they wanted to perhaps start a child care or purchase slots from
an existing child care facility. She said the Youth Master Plan would also look at this issue.

3. Status of elementary school site on San Francisco Property

Ms. Michelotti presented the staff report and gave a brief overview of the plan. She
indicated on a map parcel 16 and 18 that has been chosen for the school site on the Bernal

Joint Meeting 7 06/04/98
School Board/City Council
Minutes
