Ms. Dennis asked him to address the issue of the location of the crosswalk that Mr.
Mullins raised about the students crossing the driveway and why the crosswalk was not put on
the north side of the entry way.

Mr. van Gelder said the traffic enters the driveway from the right hand southbound turn
lane or the northbound left hand turn pockets on Santa Rita and this is where the pedestrians are
crossing. Staff had to come up with a safe location for the crosswalk that would work. He said
students cross the driveway presently and it seemed to be okay.

Ms. Dennis asked what the difficulty would be to put the crosswalk on the north side of
the driveway.

Mr. van Gelder said it was not advisable because of the left hand turn lane.

Ms. Michelotti asked if the option of a no right turn on red signal could be installed.

Mr. van Gelder said yes if the school was interested. Another option could be to create
a carpool/vanpool driveway only.

Ms. Michelotti appreciated Mr. Mullin's effort. After observing the traffic in the
Amador parking lot after an event, she did not agree with having only one way to move the
traffic out of the driveways.

Mr. Mullins said the only driveways into the Amador parking were the thirty foot
driveway and the twenty-one foot driveway.

Ms. Michelotti asked Mr. Mullins how many parking spaces were removed in his
proposal?

Mr. Mullins said he removed some but moved them elsewhere. He said he gave the
reconfiguration of the parking lot to Mr. van Gelder for review. When he surveyed the site he
noticed forty extra spaces available around 10:00 a.m. He did not come here this evening to
debate the issues. He felt if Council approved the pedestrian crosswalk without any input from
the School Board, it would only make matters worse.

Ms. Dennis asked if the City could install a "no fight turn on red" sign to improve
pedestrian safety without the School District's approval?

Mr. van Gelder said anything that is done needed to be in partnership with the School
District. He said significant improvement could be done without the School Districts
involvement but a better job would be done if they were involved.

Pleasanton City Council 3/03/98
Minutes 8
