Ms. Ayala indicated his diagrams had all the students going out one driveway. Did he
believe the students would be patient enough to wait?

Mr. Mullins felt it was a good idea to have some kind of control over the parking lot.

Ms. Ayaia felt one driveway was not the solution.

Mr. Mullins said his suggestions may not be the solution, but if the proposed plan was
implemented, the safety of the students would be worse.

Ms. Michelotti asked if a left hand turn lane were available.

Mr. Mullins said there is a double yellow line presently and a protected left hand turn
into the medical center approximately fifty feet further up the roadway. His proposal was to
remove the double yellow lines and start it at the center driveway and extend it approximately
150 feet.

Ms. Michelotti asked if the driveway in front of the Amador Theater would be closed.

Mr. Mullins said no, only restricted during certain hours.

Ms. Ayala asked how long the driveway would be restricted.

Mr. Mullins said for a specified time each day that the School District approved.

Ms. Ayala asked again, if he really believed that all the students would go out one
driveway. Students are very impatient.

Mr. Mullins said because the students are impatient they are apt to cause safety problems
for other students. He was not proposing his suggestions as the solution. He felt Council
needed to get input from the School Board before a plan was implemented that might worsen the
problem.

There was no further testimony.

Ms. Michelotti asked about the possibility of widening the driveway?

Mr. van Gelder felt widening the driveway was a good suggestion. He said the City and
the School District needed to work together to come up with workable solutions. He said
addressing pedestrian safety was the foremost concern and the result was to install a traffic
signal. He agreed school parking, access and circulation should have some priority as well.

Pleasanton City Council 3/03/98
Minutes 7
