Pete Meier, 4067 Jensen Street, agreed there was a safety problem on Jensen Street. He
mentioned that in the summer time the trees shade Santa Rita making it very difficult to see
oncoming traffic and pedestrians. He appreciated whatever could be done and agreed with the
staff report.

Ms. Ayala asked him if he wanted the trees removed.

Mr. Meier hated to see the trees cut down, but in a situation like this, he looked at it as
a safety issue. He suggested removing one tree and seeing if that worked.

Ms. Ayala asked if he thought the modification to the intersection would solve the
problem.

Mr. Meier said the modification would have vehicles stopping farther back, but when
vehicles tried to pull off onto the frontage road, the vehicles would have to move forward and
then the sight distance would be blocked.

Ms. Ayala asked if tapering the island would help.

Mr. Meier did not believe it would. He said the vehicles move too fast. He suggested
a combination of removing and trimming trees.

Ms. Michelotti asked if trimming around the existing light pole area would help?

Mr. Meier said yes.

Daryl Mullins, 4078 Silver Street, showed slides of the area. He indicated pickup and
drop off points for students attending Amador High School. He said the vehicles group at the
driveways making it very difficult to enter and exit. He said the proposed design concept
created a safety hazard. He showed on the slides different suggestions for Silver Street/Santa
Rita. Essentially he suggested making a dual left hand turn lane and changing the striping in
the parking lot to accommodate a circular counter clockwise entrance and exit in the existing
center thirty foot driveway. Also a "No right turn" sign should be installed on Silver Street.
He was disappointed that no School Board members showed up to speak. He felt the staff
recommendations is only half the solution.

Ms. Ayala asked if he had presented his proposals to the School Board.

Mr. Mullins said he gave it to Laura Bassett, who was in support of it, but he has not
heard about it since. He said Pat Goodday, Amador Principal, also supported his suggestions.
He quoted Ms. Goodday, "I never park in the front parking lot; it is too dangerous."

Pleasanton City Council 3/03/98
Minutes 6
