Item 6g
Selection of names for two North Pleasanton Neighborhood Parks and the
renaming/rededicating the Aquatic Center. (SR98:09)

Item 6j
Initiate Park and Recreation Commission discussion of Renaming/Rededicating the Aquatic
Center. (SR98:62)

Deborah Acosta presented the staff report.

It was moved by Mr. Plco, and seconded by Ms. Michelotti, to initiate a process for
the Park and Recreation Commission to discuss renaming/rededicating the Aquatic Center
as the Dolores Bengtson Aquatic Center.

Ms. Michelotti supported the renaming of the Aquatic Center but wanted to give the Park
and Recreation Commission the option of looking at all the alternatives.

Ms. Acosta said the policy states the Park and Recreation Commission can initiate the
hearing on its own, or Council can request to hold a hearing, or the City Manager can request
a hearing. So it is up to Council to send whatever information it chooses to, or simply to
request a hearing. The Park and Recreation Commission is then required to come back to
Council with a recommendation.

Ms. Ayala asked Ms. Bengston to describe her employment with the City.

Ms. Bengston said she started working for the City of Pleasanton in 1969 before the
Aquatic Center was constructed. She went to work at Amador Pool teaching swimming,
working in an aide program and with disabled children. The following year, she was present
when the Aquatic Center was opened and at the conclusion of that year, she became the aquatic
supervisor. She became a full time employee in 1975 at which time she was doing the aquatic
program, playground program and other programs. She stayed involved in the aquatic program
until 1979 but did not give up her instructor certification until 1981. She said one thing that will
remain dear to her heart will be the people she taught to swim. One of the values of the aquatic
center is making residents safe in and about the water.

The roll call vote was as follows:
AYES: Councilmembers - Ayala, Michelotti, Pico and Vice Mayor Dennis.
NOES: None
ABSENT: Mayor Tarvet
ABSTAIN: None

Pleasanton City Council 3/03/98
Minutes 15
