It was moved by Mr. Pico, and seconded by Ms. Michelotti, adding a Youth
Commissioner to the Task Force.
The roll call vote was as fOllOwS:
AYES: Councilmembers - Ayala, Michelotti, Pico and Vice Mayor Dennis.
NOES: None
ABSENT: Mayor Tarver
ABSTAIN: None

Mr. Pico was impressed with the use of the computer to present the slide show. He
looked forward to continuing to make significant strides in televising the Council meetings.

Ms. Dennis welcomed public input in regards to the presentations done at the Council
meetings.

Item 6f
Review of the proposed sculpture to be placed in Centennial Park adjacent to the Senior
Center. (SR98:47)

Jim Wolfe presented the staff report.

Ms. Michelotti asked what avenues were used to procure the $5,000.

Andy Jorgensen said one of the goals of the Civic Arts Commission has been to
encourage private developers to place public art in its projects so the commercial funding has
been focused on the developers' own projects. There was a conservative fund raising effort
done.

Ms. Ayala asked the artist to explain the art piece.

Mr. Jorgensen introduced Lynne Baer, Arts Consultant, and Diana Pumpelly Bates, the
artist.

Diana Pumpelly Bates said she was honored to have been the selected artist to do an art
piece for this community. She said the challenge for developing this model was to come up with
an idea that had to do with some existing aspects that were already established in the park,
which was a symbolic sun dial indicating the passage of time. Her idea incorporated the way
in which the sun moved across the heavens. The sculpture will have an opening that allows the
sun to shine on the ground and move, which also shows the passing of time. She hoped that
once the project is done it would be enjoyed by all.

Ms. Dennis asked how high the finished piece would be.

Pleasanton City Council 3/03/98
Minutes 13
