Mayor Tarver asked if the elimination of beer and wine would affect the operation of
Chevron.

Mr. McThewson said it would affect profitability.

Bill LinGley, Chevron, 6000 Bollinger Canyon Road, said the sale of beer and wine in
itself is not a major issue. However, because of the ancillary items that it supports there is a
dramatic need for beer and wine in convenience stores.

Ms. Ayala asked if having Safeway nearby would affect the business.

Mr. LinGley said no. He appreciated staff's support and efforts and reiterated the issues
that Chevron would like to work out with staff. He said he spoke with Sharon Hines who
misunderstood where the window was going. She thought it was a one way mirror looking out
into the cashier area. He said this could be worked out with staff as well as the trash
receptacles. He appreciated a review of this and hoped to get the project built before December.
He has a deadline of December 12 to remove the steel tanks from the ground.

Jack Hovingh, 4250 Muirwood Drive, appreciated the project, however he had some
reservations. He believed that the sale of alcoholic beverages at a gasoline station was not
appropriate. He asked, does the sale of alcoholic beverages in a gasoline station increase the
future of the children of Pleasanton. Also there are already three stores within one hundred feet
of each other that sell alcohol. He was really concerned about the sale of alcohol. He hoped
Council would support the project but remove the ability of the store to sell alcoholic beverages.

Mr. McThewson understood the sale of beer and wine was an emotional issue. He read
a report that stated most DUI arrests were people that had been drinking at a bar. -He did not
think this would be a problem with the community and Chevron needs it to be able to help pay
for this major investment.

Ms. Michelotti complimented him on the design of the project and the right hand turn
lanes.

There being no further speakers, the public hearing was closed.

Ms. Michelotti asked if the approval of alcoholic beverages at service stations had been
approved previously and if so, where.

Mr. Swift said the stations are mixed throughout the City. He said there is a list in the
Planning Commission staff report.

Ms. Dennis asked if they needed the trash receptacles.

Pleasanton City Council 31 08/18/98
Minutes
