atmospheric science, for receiving the MacArthur Fellowship and for bringing honor to himself
and his community.

Ben Santer said he was surprised to learn that he had won such an award. He explained
his duties as a scientist and hoped that this reward would enable him to help the community
understand climate changes. He is honored to be a citizen of Pleasanton and thanked Council
for the plaque.

Mayor Tarver said Council would be honored to help him in his cause and future work.

Ms. Acosta announced again that Item 6d, the appeal of the Early Learning Institute, had
been pulled from the agenda by the applicant. The applicant will be submitting an application
for modular buildings which would probably be heard at the Planning Commission's meeting on
July 29, 1998.

Ivan Morse, 2311 Corte de la Jam, President for the Pleasanton Seahawks, thanked
Council for the Aquatic Center. He indicated that one of the swimmers would be representing
the City at the Goodwill Games which was a direct result from having a 50 meter pool. He also
said the Aquatic Center had hosted two meets and will be hosting the "Far Westerns" event in
March 1999. That event will bring in a number of participants and observers which will benefit
the City. Another benefit was that one of the swim Coaches was asked to attend the Olympic
coach training held last month in Colorado. The Pleasanton Seahawks say thank you.

Robert Cordtz, 262 West Angela, asked for answers to questions he has asked for several
months. He understood the City's police and fire departments are servicing the Fairgrounds
through a letter of understanding. He wanted to know if the City is able to enforce the City
code on the Fairgrounds property. He is concerned with the fire personnel going into some of
the buildings on the Fairgrounds, which are unsafe. He hoped to get an answer tonight.
Another concern he has is the street lights on West Angela that have been out for a week. He
reported the lights out but as of this evening nothing has been done. When the people had to
vacate the Fairgrounds July 4, they had to walk down West Angela in the dark. He found this
very upsetting. He has read the agreement signed by the City of Pleasanton and the County of
Alameda regarding the Fairgrounds and he found no mention of safety. He said the Fair Board
will not even buy metal detectors. The City of Pleasanton has a plan to install a monitoring
system at the railroad tracks by the Fairgrounds but the Fair Board claims it does not have the
money. He asked what happened to the fencing that was supposed to be constructed. The City
has stated that it will give $25,000 towards fencing. There is no indication of any fencing being
constructed. The City has been unsuccessful in getting the signs cleaned up for the miniature
golf course. He asked Council to direct the City Manager to provide him with some answers.

Ms. Acosta said to the best of her ability she has tried to answer Mr. Cordtz's questions.
The agreement reached with Alameda County describes that an agreement will be reached
separately which will state who is responsible for the on-going code regulations and which

Pleasanton City Council 5 07/07/98
Minutes
