20.08.049 <br />CHAPTER 3-System Components - <br />amended <br />Section 3-3 Piping is amended: <br />Section 3-3 is amended to delete all <br />references to ferrous metal pipe. Fer- <br />rous metal pipe is not permitted. <br />Section 3-6 Alarms is amended to <br />read: <br />Local water flow alarms shall be <br />provided on all sprinkler systems. <br />Water flow alarms and valve tamper <br />shall be connected to an Underwrit- <br />ers Laboratory (UL) listed Central <br />Station Service under the following <br />conditions: <br />(a) All buildings with eight (8) or <br />more units or, <br />(b) When there are four (4) or more <br />buildings per complex or, <br />(c) When there are more than sixty- <br />four (64) units per complex. <br />CHAPTER 4-System Design - <br />amended <br />Section 4-1.2.1. Number of Design <br />Sprinklers and Water Demand is <br />amended to read: <br />The number of design sprinklers <br />shall be as follows: <br />(a) Standard for One (1) to Four (4) <br />Dwelling Units. <br />The number of design sprinklers <br />shall include all sprinklers within a <br />compartment to a maximum of three <br />(3) fire sprinklers based on the Un- <br />derwriters Laboratory (UL) listing <br />for residential fire sprinklers with a <br />minimum flow rate of 0.05 gallons <br />per minute per square foot. This is <br />based on the UL 1626 residential fire <br />sprinkler product standard. When the <br />number of design sprinklers is less <br />than three (3) for a compartment, the <br />design shall include a five (5) gallon <br />per minute domestic use simulta- <br />neous with sprinkler flow per unit. <br />This domestic use shall be calculated <br />at the base of riser. <br />Pilot sprinklers shall be provided in <br />the attic and between floors where <br />floor/ceiling assemblies consist of <br />open web wood joists or trusses. <br />Pilot sprinklers shall be 212 degree <br />F, '/16 inch orifice. Pilot sprinklers <br />shall be located at maximum 30 feet <br />centers (Maximum 15 feet from <br />outside walls) and shall be located at <br />all heat and fire sources including <br />furnaces, hot water heaters, above <br />kitchen ranges, etc. Fire sprinklers in <br />garages shall be 200 degree F, quick <br />response, '/16 inch orifice (K=4.0 to <br />4.5) with a maximum spacing of 130 <br />to 150 square feet per sprinkler. <br />(b) Standard for Mid-Sized Multi- <br />Family Residential Sprinkler Systems <br />for Five (5) to Fifteen (15) Dwelling <br />Units in Residential Structures Not <br />Exceeding twelve thousand square <br />feet (12,000 square feet) shall be as <br />follows: <br />704-3 (Pleasanton April 2003) <br />
