20.08.049 <br />The number of design sprinklers <br />shall be the hydraulically most re- <br />mote six (6) sprinklers above or <br />below the ceiling. When a common <br />fire sprinkler and domestic water <br />supply is provided, the fire sprinkler <br />calculation shall include the simulta- <br />neous domestic flow of five (5) <br />gallons per minute per dwelling unit. <br />This domestic flow shall be calculat- <br />ed at the base of the riser. <br />Exception: This standard does not <br />include hotels, motels, or day care <br />centers with more than twelve (12) <br />occupants. <br />(c) Sprinklers shall be provided in <br />attics and between floors where <br />floor/ceiling assemblies consist of <br />open web wood joists or trusses. <br />Exception: Townhouses with ap- <br />proved one-hour separations at the <br />property line shall have pilot sprin- <br />klers per (a) above. <br />CHAPTER 4-System Design - <br />amended <br />Section 4-1.3-Water Demand is <br />amended to read: <br />(a.) One (1) to four (4) dwelling <br />units. <br />The water demand for the system <br />shall be determined by multiplying <br />the design area of the largest com- <br />partment by the specified application <br />rate. Additional demand is required <br />for domestic use as specified in <br />Section 4-1.2.1 (above). <br />CHAPTER 4-System Design - <br />amended <br />Section 4-2.6 is added to read: <br />(a) Pilot fire sprinkler protection and <br />fire detection shall be provided in all <br />attic spaces. Pilot fire sprinkler loca- <br />tions shall be near heat or fire sourc- <br />es, i.e., HVAC equipment, water <br />heaters, kitchen duct/exhaust penetra- <br />tions, or other electrical or gas fired <br />equipment, etc. <br />(b) Pilot fire sprinkler sprig ups or <br />risers shall be braced in accordance <br />with pipe manufacturers recommen- <br />dations for vertical support and with- <br />in 4 to 6 inches of the fire sprinkler <br />when the vertical riser exceeds 30 <br />inches vertically. <br />Chapter 4-System Design -amended <br />Section 4-6 Location of Sprinklers is <br />amended to read: <br />Sprinklers shall be installed in all <br />areas. <br />Exception # 1: Sprinklers may be <br />omitted from bathrooms not exceed- <br />ing 55 square feet (5.1 m) with non- <br />combustible fixtures. <br />Exception #2: Sprinklers may be <br />omitted from small closets where the <br />least dimension does not exceed 3 <br />feet (0.9 m), the area does not ex- <br />ceed 24 square feet (2.2 m), and the <br />walls and ceiling are surfaced with <br />non-combustible materials. <br />(Pleasanton April 2003) 704-4 <br />
