She provided information about design opportunities, wind in the area, views, and
location of quarry lakes, and reviewed the overall landscape on the site. Ms. Keller provided additional
information regarding vehicular/pedestrian crossings and animal habitat.
Mr. Wolfe advised that copies of emails received by staff regarding this matter have been provided to the
Commission. The staff report attachments included: a) proposed trail alignment from Livermore to
Pleasanton; b) current Pleasanton trails map; c) information regarding the proposed ice facility; d)
Logitech facility data; e) Dublin Ice Rink data; f) Staples Ranch Community Park area map; and g) auto
mall acquisition option.
Mr. Wolfe reviewed a map with Commissioner Pentin, and advised that the proposed location of the
Sharks Ice Facility would straddle the community park and the commercial area. He also advised that the
Commission was being asked to review potential sports facilities for the park, and reviewed the City
facilities plan at build-out.
A presentation was made by Sharks representatives Jim Goddard and John Gusterson. They advised that
the proposal was fora 134,000 sq. ft. facility, which would include four (4) skating rinks, rental area, pro
shop, conference rooms, restaurant, etc. Hockey leagues for all levels would be provided, along with daily
public skating sessions, group activities, birthday parties, special needs programs, etc. The Sharks would
work with the YMCA and Boy/Girl Scouts programs, and are willing to work with the City's Parks and
Community Services Department to implement new programs. Mr. Goddard advised that the Shark's
objective is to allow skating for as many people as possible.
The Commission was provided additional information regarding the Shark's proposal to move the ice
complex closer to the auto mall area. Mr. Gusterson discussed parking access for the ice facility, which he
advised would be primarily from the Auto Mall Parkway. He estimated that 90% of all visitors to the
Sharks facility would approach via I-580/Auto Mall Parkway. Mr. Wolfe stated that the modified plan did
not increase acreage for the park, and that Alameda County representatives have indicated support for the
re-configured park.
Commissioners discussed with the Sharks representatives: 1) the differences in this new plan and the
original proposal, 2) whether the proposed facility size would work in Pleasanton, 3) comparison of this
facility to Logitech in San Jose, based on the number of residents in each of the cities, 4) inclusion of
school programs; and 5) timeframe for completion of the project.
Pat Kernan -indicated that Sharks representatives have met with Pleasanton Unified School District
(PUSD) personnel, and a physical education program utilizing the ice facility is being considered.
Chairperson Ellgas opened the meeting for Public Comment at 7:50 p.m.
Chase Preston. 4838 Braxton Place - 9 year old Chase advised that he plays ice hockey for the Tri-Valley
Blue Devils, and would ultimately like to play in the National Hockey League (NHL).
