David Block, 8506 Lupine Court - read a prepared statement advising that he has a strong interest in an
ice skating facility being built in the Tri-Valley. He also discussed the benefits of recreational exercise,
and national obesity problems.
Rich Cimino, 1281 Ridgewood Road - as a representative for the Audubon Society, he was very
interested in green space for the park. He would prefer to see it as a continuous area, and not as proposed
by the Sharks. He discussed plans for saving trees in the area. Mr. Cimino indicated that he was not
opposed to a Sharks facility being built in Pleasanton, but would like to see certain entities kept in the
park.
Commissioner Pentin questioned Mr. Fulford about whether trees in the proposed area were heritage trees,
and was advised that this was something that would be reviewed at the next stage of the process.
Judith Geiselman, 2602 Glen Isle Avenue -felt that the Sharks proposal was a major commercial activity
and not a park amenity. She would prefer to see the Sharks facility in a commercial area. Ms. Geiselman
had several questions and concerns, including: 1) what had been done to validate this as a community-
wide need; 2) how many Pleasanton residents would use such a facility; 3) financial responsibility by the
City for sales; 4) having a commercial entity in a community park; and 5) need for a community center.
Greg_Visscher, 2508 Wilde Avenue -encouraged the Commission to consider appropriate Arroyo Mocho
trail improvements as part of the approval process. Mr. Visscher discussed access to the trail, and felt that
some of the development costs should be assessed to the developers.
Commissioner Kummer discussed with Mr. Visscher paving costs for this portion of the trail. Mr.
Visscher advised the costs would run approximately $50/linear foot, a total of approximately $850,000.
Leonard Cooper, 6923 Lassen Street -advised that he was President of the Pleasanton Community Tennis
Club, which supports the inclusion of tennis courts in Staples Ranch Community Park. Mr. Cooper
reviewed the National Guidelines information provided by staff and advised that, based on this
information, the City falls shorts on tennis courts, especially lighted courts. He requested that the
Commission consider 4-6 tennis courts for the park, indicating that 2-acres would be needed for up to six
(6) courts.
Carolyn Ainsworth, 3271 Flemington Court - as a tennis player, Ms. Ainsworth felt strongly that tennis
courts should be included in the plans for the community park. She strongly urged the Commission to
consider lighted courts for the park.
John Cligny, 3435 Gravina Place -representing the soccer community. He advised that while the soccer
groups support the Sharks proposal, they are concerned with the reconfiguration. It appears that the
revised plan might eliminate uses for the remaining acreage. Mr. Cligny discussed possible funding
support for fields in the park, and encouraged the Commission to consider including two (2) all-weather lit
fields, and six (6) tennis courts.
Cele Gutierrez, 3590 Churchill Court -asked the Commission to consider including a dog exercise area in
the community park plan. Ms. Gutierrez noted that including a dog exercise area in the park would help
achieve the City's goal of having a facility in each quadrant of the City.
Parks and Recreation Commission Minutes
March I , 2007
Page 3
