baseball fields in the City, and hoped the Commission would consider all groups when making its
recommendation.
Frank Ransome, 1317 Ptanni~an Drive, #5 -discussed the rejuvenation of lawn bowling and the
advantages of using artificial turf for this sport. Mr. Ransome asked that the Commission include space
for lawn bowling in its recommendations for this park.
Commissioners were advised by Mr. Ransome that a bowling green of 130' x 130' could accommodate 64
people at the same time. He also advised that the closest areas with greens are in San Jose and Oakland.
Judith Geiselman, Pleasanton -was happy to see that so many elements had been included in the design
concepts, and indicated her preference for Option B. She questioned the proposed location of the Sharks
facility, suggesting it be relocated in the SE corner of the property. Ms. Geiselman indicated that she is
neither for nor against the Sharks facility, but would prefer it to be located on commercial property and
not in the park. Ms. Geiselman also favors the City's proposal to purchase an additional 5-acres for the
park.
Valerie Arkin, 3740 Newton Way -advocated for sports fields and felt that a baseball field should be
included as a park element. Ms. Arkin also felt that another set of restrooms needed to be included in the
design, and would like to see a guarantee regarding acreage allocated for sports fields and tennis courts.
She was also interested in seeing the park improvements done at the same time as the Sharks project.
Mr. Wolfe advised that the Sharks organization would be responsible for all costs associated with building
the ice rink, while the park and its elements would depend on available City funding.
John Cligny, 3435 Gravina Place -advised that he was representing the soccer community, and was
happy to see the integration of sports fields in the park designs. He discussed a report that staff provided
at the previous workshop regarding the number of sports fields/court availability, and that a section be
added showing dedicated fields. Mr. Cligny expressed concerns about funding for the park, and
encouraged staff to seek financial support from the Sharks and Silicon Valley companies.
Steven Kelly, 587 San Miguel Court -supports inclusion of the Sharks facility, and encouraged the
Commission to also include a baseball field. Mr. Kelly also supported lawn bowling as a passive use.
Garland Drawer, 4031 Schween Court -indicated that she supported the proposed plans, but wondered if
any consideration had been given to having a combined indoor roller/inline/ice skating facility.
Chairperson Ellgas closed the meeting for public comment at 8:08 p.m.
Commissioner Kummer discussed with staff the report that had been referenced by Mr. Cligny. Mr.
Fulford advised that it was a planning document prepared to compare Pleasanton fields to fields in other
communities. Commissioner Kinzer agreed with staff s comments, but felt that looking at total field use
would be helpful to the Commission when it is trying to make decisions.
Staff provided additional information regarding artificial turf and lighted fields; and discussed the distance
of existing homes from this park site.
Parks & Recreation Commission Minutes
April 5, ?007
Page 3
