Commissioner Kinzer indicated that he supported inclusion of the Sharks facility for the park. He also
supported Concept B, including the sports fields (with baseball), tennis courts, dog exercise area, and two
(2) restroom facilities. He was intrigued by the lawn bowling suggestion, but didn't recommend it be
included.
Commissioner Dibiase also supported the Sharks facility, since it would bring a new activity to
Pleasanton. He liked Concept A, but would like to see a different loading area configuration for the
Sharks facility. Commissioner Dibiase recommended a minimum of four (4) bocce courts be included, so
the City could accommodate tournaments, and questioned whether the proposed dog exercise area would
accommodate small/large dogs. He liked the idea of including lawn bowling instead of open space, and
would consider four (4) tennis courts instead of six (6). He was undecided about including a baseball
field.
Commissioner Kummer advised that he was in favor of including the Sharks facility, but hoped that the
new alternatives would provide more diversity. He was disturbed about losing the open space between
Livermore and Pleasanton, and hoped that it could be preserved. He would like to see trails, open space,
tennis courts, and bocce courts in the park, but no sports fields. He liked the idea of placing amenities
close to the senior housing complex, and questioned the possibility of partnering to help with some of the
costs of those improvements. Commissioner Kummer also indicated that he would like to see eight (8)
tennis courts in the park.
Commissioner Pentin thought the design showed great placement of amenities. Since the park is in an
industrial area, he feels that it provides a great opportunity for including lighted fields. He was in favor of
Concept A, including bocce and tennis courts, and supports the Sharks facility; however, he felt the Sharks
organization should be approached about helping with the park costs.
Chairperson Ellgas indicated that she was in favor of Concept A, including the Sharks facility. She
agreed, however, that the Sharks should be approached about contributing to park costs. She also liked
the idea of including six (6) tennis courts, a dog exercise/agility park, and lighted sports fields, but didn't
support including a baseball field. Chairperson Ellgas also wanted to incorporate lawn bowling in the
design, and recommended two (2) restroom facilities be provided.
Mr. Wolfe reviewed with Commissioners their comments and recommendations, which included:
1) inclusion of tennis courts, the number of which will be decided at the April 12, 2007 Parks and
Recreation Commission;
2) sports fields, but no baseball field;
3) a lawn bowling green;
4) inclusion of the Sharks facility; and
5) two (2) restroom facilities.
Mr. Rasmussen advised that the plan would be reworked and brought back to the Commission for review
and consideration at its April 12 meeting. He also discussed with Chairperson Ellgas the letter received
from School Superintendent John Casey, and indicated some of the text would be included when the
presentation is made to City Council.
Parks & Recreation Commission Minutes
April 5, 2007
Page 4
