John Sensiba, 1864 Tanglewood Way -favored the proposed Sharks facility.
Becky Dennis, 838 Gray Fox Circle -had questions regarding whether the City would ultimately own and
operate the Sharks facility, and what the costs would be to the City. Ms. Dennis felt that the Shazks
proposal was compatible with other park uses, and hoped that the possibility of acquiring some additional
acreage would be pursued.
Dick uigley, 4613 Cope Court -indicated that he was a trails advocate, and was happy to hear the
discussion pertaining to trails. Mr. Quigley provided information about fish ladders, and suggested that
interpretive staging areas be considered. He provided additional information regazding the importance of
bird-watching in the area.
Chairperson Ellgas closed the meeting for Public Comment at 9:07 pm, and suggested a 10-minute
break. The meeting resumed at 9:15 pm.
Mr. Wolfe reviewed with the Commission the proposed facilities for Staples Ranch Community Ranch as
recommended during the eazlier public comment portion of the meeting, i.e.: ice skating facility; two (2)
lighted, all-weather soccer/football/lacrosse fields; 4-6 lighted tennis courts; trails and trail connections;
dog exercise area; access for bird watching; green buffer between Livermore and Pleasanton; and bocce
courts.
The Commission was advised by Mr. Wolfe that the Sharks facility would be used exclusively for ice
related events, which could include National events. The Commission was also advised that ultimate
ownership of the facility by the City had not been decided, but may be a consideration. Commissioner
Kummer discussed the estimated cost to build the facility, and annual operating costs.
Mr. Wolfe advised Commissioner Pentin that staff may pursue purchase of an additional 5-acres of land,
but would be looking to the Commission to provide direction and use preferences.
Chairperson Ellgas suggested prioritizing the facility recommendations made by the public, and then
including items Commissioners would like to see added. Commissioner Dibiase indicated that he would
like to see more open space.
Commissioner Kummer requested that staff provide information about the fish ladders, and whether the
fish could actually live in this area. Mr. Wolfe discussed the inclusion of a pedestrian bridge for the area.
Further discussion was held regarding all-weather fields in other cities. Mr. Wolfe also asked whether the
Commission should be considering baseball fields for the park.
Comments from Commissioner Dibiase included: 2-3 acres of open space; 1-2 acres for large and small
dog exercise areas; four (4) lighted tennis courts; group picnic area; tot-lot; and restroom. He felt the
remaining acreage could be used either for the Sharks facility or additional sports fields. Commissioner
Dibiase didn't see the need for including bocce courts at the park, but felt the bocce courts at the Senior
Center could be expanded.
Parks and Recreation Commission Minutes
March 1, 2007
Page 5
