Nick Powers, 3697 Locke Court -fourth grader Nick Powers advised that he was a member of the Tri-
Valley Hockey team, and supported having Sharks build a facility in Pleasanton.
John Carroll, 2981 Moreno Avenue -felt the proposed Sharks facility was more than should be
accomodated on the property. He discussed planned trails for the area, and the benefits the parks facilities
would offer to seniors living in the senior facility close to the park, i.e. bocce courts. Mr. Carroll
encouraged the Commission to consider earlier comments from the Audubon Society, and was encouraged
with the flexibility offered in the redesign.
Dan Faustina, 1405 Calle Enrique -was excited about the Sharks proposal for the youth of Pleasanton.
Mr. Faustina advised that he represented the Pleasanton Junior Football League, and was concerned with
the fact that his organization has had to cut two (2) teams because of a lack of the available fields. He
encouraged the Commission to consider including football/lacrosse fields in the park, and believed that
approximately 1.8 acres would be needed to achieve that goal.
Chairperson Ellgas discussed with staff the possibility of including multi-use, all-weather lit fields, and
the scheduling of such fields.
Susan Spitzer, 4250 Diavila Avenue -questioned whether the Sharks facility would be a local or regional
facility, and indicated that she would prefer the park be for the use of Pleasanton residents. She indicated
support for soccer fields and a dog exercise area. Ms. Spitzer also felt that a Sharks facility would bring
unwanted traffic into the City.
Patricia Vicary and Jean Fahmie, 5133 Independent Drive -provided information about the St. Moritz Ice
Skating Club, of which they are members. They agreed that the Sharks facility would be a regional
facility, but felt that it would benefit the City. They asked the Commission to support including the ice
facility in Staples Ranch Community Park.
Allen Roberts, 16 Grey Eagle Court -discussed how facilities in Pleasanton offer benefits to children, and
encouraged the Commission to consider adding the Sharks facility. Mr. Roberts felt that the facility
would be an enormous asset to Pleasanton, while also benefiting the region. He stated that the Sharks
were ahigh-class organization, and would make this facility atop-class operation.
Dan Maslana, 4250 Diavila Avenue -felt that the Sharks facility was going to be the main focus of
Staples Ranch Community Park. Mr. Maslana indicated that he was not against the Sharks proposal, but
asked the Commission to consider other options. He felt that senior activities for the park should be kept
in mind, as should a dog exercise area and access to the Arroyo Mocho trail.
Drew Burns, 1137 Via di Salerno -advised that he has played ice hockey for over 30 years, and felt the
Sharks would build a world class facility. He discussed Logitech Ice in San Jose, and thought such a
facility in Pleasanton would be a win-win situation.
Stuart Cooke (Alameda County) 224 W. Winton -advised that Alameda County supports the realignment
of the Staples Ranch property, which would benefit access to the area. Mr. Cooke further discussed
removal of the berm, green buffer area, trees, an old farmhouse, and trail complexities.
Parks and Recreation Commission Minutes
March 1, 2007
Page 4
