The Annual Plan should include recommendations and implementation
strategies for a fall and spring program for visiting school classes. These
programs shall be included in the offerings of the City's Young Explorers
Environmental Education Program, which is designed to provide 1-2
classrooms of 30 students each with a 2-3 hour on-site, hands-on
environmental/cultural experience. Lesson plans should be based upon
"inquiry" teaching strategies that provide hands-on experiences and strengthen
students' knowledge and understanding of the three (3) cultural/historical eras
represented at the site. The fall and spring programs should be differentiated
as to historical eras and themes, to provide at least two opportunities for a
classroom to visit the site during the academic year. The experiences should
be designed to take full advantage of the Park's amenities, including the small
amphitheater, exhibits and learning stations. On- site experiences should be
modeled after programs that emphasize small group instruction and rotational
type "learning center" strategies, which will make use of several portable carts
and portions of the site designed for small group work. The Sutter's Fort
educational program could be considered a suitable model for this type of
teaching strategy and visitor experience.
ALVHS will apply its historical expertise and research capabilities in the
development of each semester's program in consultation with the City's
Naturalist and Environmental Education Supervisor. City staff will ultimately
be responsible for the implementation of the program.
C. Ridge Runner Summer Camp Program
The Annual Plan should also anticipate summertime visits to the Park by
participants in the City's Ridge Runner Summer Day Camp Program.
Programming plans for such visits should emulate those developed for the
Young Explorers program, and accommodate at least one visit per week by
the campers.
D. Environmental Education Fee Classes
The Annual Plan will include recommendations for a variety of fee classes
and lectures to be offered through the City's Department of Parks and
Community Services, and taught by the City Naturalist and other contract
instructors. The classes will be offered during the fall, winter, spring, and
summer periods, and include a variety of topics and activities:
• Arts and Crafts
• Technology, i.e. point making, weaving, shelter construction
• Storytelling
• Genealogy (early Californio Families)
• History
2
