BACKGROUND
The preliminary concept for the project was initiated in early 2001 and provides for the
restoration of several creeks and arroyos through the Bernal Property and adjacent
private development property. Current restoration efforts included the creation of a
riparian corridor of approximately 13.5 acres with a realigned, meandering creek
through the Bernal property (see map below).
FuNrt Bernal Park
(Initial Phase)
~.y~~~ Phase III
f:' (Mission Creek)
Phase I V ! ~ ~. :~~~
with Park ~ _ `
( +~ ." The northerly portion of
Phase II will be incorporated as part of the park development plans for the future sports
fields. The detention basins and pretreatment marsh, as depicted on the map above,
were installed as part of the adjacent private residential development.
In 2002, the City of Pleasanton initiated and obtained environmental permits covering
the restoration of Sycamore Creek, Mission Creek, and the series of Zone 7 Flood
Control Channels that run through what is referred to today as the Bernal Property and
the Applied Biosystems Campus. The restoration and environmental permitting of the
creek restoration provides for the removal of invasive species and plants, the planting of
native habitat, the realignment of the creeks to reflect a watercourse that was more
meandering and natural, and the installation of a temporary irrigation system.
The project design was intended to blend with development as it occurs. Portions of the
creek restoration occur on private property and will occur as private development takes
place and as the future park site develops. A design contract was awarded by City
Council on July 15, 2003, to LTD Engineering for the preparation of design plans,
Page 2 of 4
