Page 2
July 27, 1989
Job No. 7969.000

Beginning in 1964, the evaporation ponds began to be filled in,
primarily with soil and construction debris in a north to south
direction. At the time of our previous soil investigation in 1985,
portions of two of the southernmost ponds remained unfilled.
Filling of the ponds was completed within the past few years. The
existing fill in the evaporation pond area extends to depths of
about 8 to 10 feet, and is of unknown compaction. Debris primarily
consists of concrete, asphalt, and pieces of metal. The site is
presently used as the City Corporation Yard and houses offices,
maintenance shops, garages, and storage areas.

The purposes of our investigation will be to gather additional
information on the nature, distribution, and characteristics of the
earth materials and groundwater throughout the property, to
evaluate the geologic structure of the site, and to develop
geotechnical recommendations for foundation design and other
aspects of the proposed development. The scope of our work will
include a field exploration program with drilled borings, sampling
of subsurface and surface soils, laboratory testing, engineering
and geologic analyses, and preparation of a written report.

Field Exploration

We propose to drill 3 borings to depths of about 20 feet at the
proposed location of the Senior Center building to provide
geotechnical information for foundation design. Permits from Zone
7 will be obtained prior to drilling. Soil samples will be
obtained from each of the borings at a minimum of 5-foot intervals
and at any change in lithology.

Laboratory Analyses

Some of the soil samples from the borings will be selected for
geotechnical laboratory testing, which will include moisture
density determinations and Atterberg Limit tests to aid in
classification and evaluate expansiveness, consolidation tests on
compressible materials to allow settlement analyses, static
strength determinations for foundation design parameters, and R
value tests on near surface soils for pavement design.

Analysis and Report Preparation

The geotechnical laboratory test data will be analyzed in order to
evaluate the subsurface conditions and to prepare geotechnical
design recommendations for the proposed development. A written
report will be submitted providing our conclusions and
recommendations along with field and laboratory test data.
Geotechnial recommendations will include:

BERLOGAR GEOTECHNICAL CONSULTANTS
