TO APPROVAL
5.
Ther
6.
There were none.
7. MATTERS BEFORE THE COMMISSION

A. Uadate Re¢ardin¢ City Acauisition of Pleasanton Memorial Gardens Cemetery and
Proaosed Name Change
Mr. Wolfe provided information pertaining to the acquisition of the Pleasanton Memorial Gardens
Cemetery in January 2007, the involvement of a community group known as Pleasanton Pioneer
Cemetery, Inc., and the maintenance and site improvements that have been conducted to date. He also
advised that the City received a letter from the Pleasanton Pioneer Cemetery Committee requesting the
name of the cemetery be changed to Pleasanton Pioneer Cemetery. Mr. Wolfe introduced Deputy City
Manager Julie Yuan-Miu, and advised that she has been working closely with the Pleasanton Pioneer
Cemetery Committee.
Commissioner Pentin was advised by Mr. Wolfe and Ms. Hagopian that changing the name of the
cemetery would not affect the upkeep by the City's maintenance contractor. They noted that it has always
been the City's intent to maintain the site as a "Pioneer" cemetery without regular irrigation. The
Commission discussed the possibility of receiving negative public comments when the area began to
"brown out" during the warmer summer months. It was suggested that the area be well maintained until at
least the Memorial Day services had been conducted.
Mr. Wolfe and Ms. Hagopian also provided the Commission with information regarding plans to reinstall
the ironwork arch across the cemetery driveway. It was suggested that the Commission may wish to
discuss this further with the Committee representatives in attendance.
Chairperson Ellgas opened the meeting for public comment at 7:12 p.m.
Chris Beratlis. 40 Beratlis Place -advised that it is the desire of the Pioneer Committee that the cemetery
be maintained as a park. The group accepted the City's recommendation to maintain the site in a
prairie/pioneer status, but have already received calls about the issue of "browned out turf." Mr. Beratlis
indicated that his group would be flexible with the naming recommendations made by the Commission.
H.W. Neely, 448 Amador -expressed his concern with "brown out" conditions at the cemetery, and the
desire for this not to happen before the Memorial Day celebration. Mr. Neeley also asked about the
possibility of parking along the street during the Memorial Day services, and was informed by Mr. Wolfe
that this should be discussed with staff in the Traffic Division. Mr. Neely advised that he has received
numerous compliments regarding the cemetery improvements.
Parks and Recreation Commission Minutes
May 10, 2007
Page 2
