Chairperson Getty then asked if an 18 ft. driveway is long enough.
Mr. Harris stated it is beginning to be long enough with the advent of
compact and subcompact cars especially with rollup type garage doors.
Commissioner Wilson addressed item 7 on the negative declaration
regarding parking but indicated that City Council approved a town-
house project on Tuesday night with less parking than this project.
He said he would like to see 4 ft. sidewalks on one side of all of
the streets. He further said that the developer has about 25 ft. to
play with and he would like to see the excess divided and make Street
"A" wider so that you have two collectors in the project and that
the most easterly one which is 28 ft. also be widened.
Mr. Harris indicated that with children living in the development,
sidewalks are an important feature and would prefer sidewalks on
both sides as opposed to the widening of streets. Commissioner
Wilson said the development doesn't have extra length in which
to put sidewalks on both sides. Mr. Harris said that one tier of
units could be removed.
Chairperson Getty then addressed the alternatives of having streets,
sidewalks and no parking areas in the project. She indicated the
project would look better with no parking on the streets.
Mr. Schaumburg and Commissioner Wilson then discussed widening of
streets, providing sidewalks and no parking in the project.
Mr. Schaumburg indicated that the east/west direction is tight in
the project and the north/south direction has more area of flexi-
bility.
Commissioner Wilson then asked Mr. Parish how much area he had
to play with. Mr. Parish, 2499 West Gate, San Jose, then intro-
duced their engineer, John Barker.
John Barker, Vaughn-Shahinian and Associates, 996 Town and Country
Village, San Jose, spoke. He indicated they have 20 ft. to play
with in the east/west direction which would allow sidewalks on
each of the north/south streets or 4 ft. paved on each side.
Commissioner Wilson then asked about the north/south direction.
Mr. Barker explained that because of the grading anticipated at
the Arroyo they would only have about 5 ft. and that if any of these
streets are to be designated as collectors, allowing for two driving
lanes with parking, it would negate the collector streets.
Commissioner Jamieson indicated the issue is collector streets vs.
sidewalks and he prefers sidewalks. Commissioner Lindsey indicated
he supports that as the development needs sidewalks especially
with children in the development.
Commissioner Jamieson then asked what was sacred by the number
of units. He said the street needs to be wider.
-9-
.__. ...__.~.... _.~.. _......___ __ _.. .. _ _ __ ,. _ _~_.~.... .__._,r._ ..
