Chairperson Getty said a health club is very definitely a 'couple
thing' and in expanding the building they will be increasing the
usage.
The public hearing was opened.
Howard Wasserteil, 39812 Mission Blvd., Fremont (the applicant) spoke.
He urged approval of his application. He stated that they are not at
two-thirds of capacity as was discussed before but basically to
capacity as a result of a promotion. He said the parking situation
currently reflects this. He stated that under no circumstances
do they wish to be bad neighbors and they have been taking parking
counts including the surrounding restaurants. He said their
counts covered two weeks from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and there
were 20/25 spaces on their lot during the raquetball's peak hours.
He said if their proposal is turned down there will continue to be
a parking problem and they are trying to increase from two to one
the amount of parking provided by virtue of the expansion. He said
the Planning Commission should understand their club is still pretty
new in Pleasanton and to a certain degree it is a novelty which will
reduce somewhat. He said they are somewhat changing their emphasis
to the health club so that circulation is spread out. He said
they would be happy to erect signs, write letters to membership to
curtail membership parking in spaces other than those properly
designated. He said they have been remiss in this regard to date.
He said they haven't told their members not to park illegally in
their parking lot or in front of the El Molino restaurant but
believes he could be effective if he did so.
Commissioner Wilson asked what the current membership is. Mr.
Wasserteil said it is right around 1500/1600 level which they have
indicated would be their maximum at their current size and with
2100 they are talking about an increase of 25$ over what it is
right now and they are increasing the parking by 65$ so they are
trying to address the parking situation. He said they are just
about ready to cut the membership off.
Chairperson Getty inquired as to whether these were family or
individual memberships. Mr. Wasserteil said there are more family
members than single members but they have both kinds.
Chairperson Getty stated that when you have a family membership
it could generate three cars; i.e., mother, father and a child
who drives. Mr. Wasserteil says most of the time they would come
in one car. He said that in a family membership often times you
have the husband coming at 6:00 a.m. in the morning, the wife
coming in the afternoon. He again stated they would be willing to
write letters to their membership, erect signs and do whatever it
would take to alleviate parking problems in the area. He urged the
extension be approved prior to his purchasing of the property.
-6-
