Robert Kenny, 3152 Chardonnay Drive, the applicant, addressed the
Commission.
Commissioner Getty asked Mr. Kenny the kinds of food that would
be served. Mr. Kenny said they would be serving coffee, soft drinks,
hot dogs and perhaps sandwiches prepared by caterers. He indicated that
it was his idea that if people want to preview the stock they can do so
and not have to go home for dinner prior to the auction. Commissioner
Getty then asked if Mr. Kenny would be restricting the seating to 100
people. Mr. Kenny indicated he would be very pleased if 100 people
attended his auctions. She then asked Mr. Kenny if he had any objections
to approving the use for a one year period. Mr. Kenny said his lease is
through 1985 and is pretty expensive and it would be difficult for him
to invest money to advertise, set up a long term lease, etc. without
a period of approval longer than one year.
Commissioner Doherty felt very strongly about a one year permit because
this is the first auction in town and will be located in an undeveloped
area. Commissioner Wilson felt it could be approved for three years
with an annual review to amend or add conditions as necessary. Com-
missioner Doherty said this would be okay with him.
Vice Chairperson Jamieson referred to condition No. 5 regarding signing
and urged the applicant to heed the ordinances of the City of Pleasanton
and to apply for signing in the proper manner.
Mr. Kenny indicated he doesn't want any gawdy signing and would probably
just replace lettering in the existing cans. Mr. Harris cautioned him
in this because some of the signs existing may be illegal.
Commissioner Doherty asked Mr. Kenny if he had designs planned for the
signs, yet. Mr. Kenny said he did not. Commissioner Doherty then told
Mr. Kenny prior to his spending any money he should submit a plan to
the planning staff for proper review.
Mr. Kenny asked the Commission if he could have a Sunday afternoon
auction every other month. He said the landlord and neighbors said
they had no objection to this. It was suggested that Mr. Kenny apply
for a modif ication to his use permit when he got ready to go into
this endeavor.
The public hearing was closed.
-6-
