Commissioner Getty asked if anyone other than the employees used this
place. Mr. Connelly stated they are not in the commercial service
business and that they do not do anything other than laundering.
Chairperson Wilson asked if they were the only business of this type
in the State. Mr. Connelly stated that Southwest Nuclear, Pleasanton,
does some of this same type of business on a smaller scale.
Commissioner Jamieson then
inspections. Mr. Connelly
their last one was in Febr~
anyone from the RADLAB had
stated he has only been in
knowledge they have had no
inquired as to the frequency of State
stated they are unannounced and that
nary. Commissioner Jamieson asked if
been out to his business. Mr. Connelly
this area since last year and to his
RADLAB visitors since that time.
Chairperson Wilson asked if the City received reports from the State.
Mr. Harris said 'evidently not.' Commissioner Jamieson stated he
felt the City should have reports. Mr. Harris stated the City could
ask them to do that. Mr. Connelly stated that the reports are
difficult for a layperson to interpret accurately and would be almost
impossible to do without a professional on the staff. He cited
incidents where the California Highway Patrol scanned vehicles at
the weigh station in Livermore and thought they were contaminated
when in fact they were not and he stated they have since stopped
scanning.
James Perasso, 123 Ray Street, spoke in opposition to this proposal
because trees and plant life appear to be dying and he believes it
is caused by the laundry. He stated radiation is going through the
roof to the trees. He stated this type of facility doesn't belong
in downtown Pleasanton and that it should be out in the country
somewhere.
Marcia Taylor, 125 Ray Street spoke stating that the police have
been called because someone jumped the fence and broke in. She said
plants, specifically directly along the fence do not grow. She then
said insurance won't even cover nuclear accidents. She stated there
should be a full-scale investigation.
Deborah Perasso, 123 Ray Street spoke and had concerns with the noise
level regarding loud speakers within the building.
Commissioner Lindsey inquired as to the hour of the noise. Ms. Perasso
explained it was at all times during the day and sometimes after
5:00-5:30pm.
Commissioner Jamieson asked Mr. Connelly about the size of the holding
tank and asked what happened if when the water was tested it was not
safe. Mr. Connelly explained it was refiltered until it was safe then
stored in a holding tank and tested to meet Federal Standards for safe
drinking.
-3-
