inspections were done under the Alameda County Health Department and
the inspector retired and the files couldn't be located. He stated
employees have been there as long as 15 years and as a result of
safety checks, do not have large concentrations of radiation in their
bodies. Mr. Harris stated that Mr. Brown presumably knows how to
interpret this report and this statement is correct. Further, Helgeson
Nuclear does a check on these people once or twice a year depending on
the job the person performs at the plant with highly calibrated instru-
ments. He stated further that the State requires Interstate to have
a consultant health physicist (Frank Bold) who inspects four times
per year and that his reports are sent to the State and copies are
maintained by the laundry but that the staff has not been provided with
Bold's reports and that Mr. Brown did not indicate any of the reports
show hazardous conditions and that further, the State seems quite happy
with their performance.
Chairperson Wilson asked Mr. Harris if he has made arrangements for the
City to receive all future reports. He also asked that if this appli-
cation was denied, would this jeopardize the current business at the site.
Mr. Harris responded that whether or not this use permit is approved,
the laundry will be allowed to continue to operate as it is now but it
might be advisable to discuss this with the City Attorney.
Chairperson Wilson stated that the expansion of 2500 sq. ft. would be a
'clean area' and that he understands that it would be where the laundry
goes after it has been processed and access to this area would not be
through the rear wall of the existing building but access would have to
be out of the current building and then into the new expansion and
further that expansion does not necessarily mean expanding the current
use with the addition of new equipment for new production and that what
is attempting to be accomplished is to add a room to store processed
laundry.
Commissioner Getty asked if the laundry people had met with the Southern
Pacific Railroad people regarding landscaping the area. Mr. Harris
stated he did not know.
The public hearing was opened.
Craig Connelly spoke representing Interstate Uniform Services Corporation.
He stated he had no comments on the staff report but would reserve the
right to rebut comments made by others.
Chairperson Wilson asked for confirmation of his statements made earlier
in the presentation and Mr. Connelly stated Chairperson Wilson's comments
were accurate and that the only machinery to be brought in would be to
replace worn out machinery.
Chairperson Wilson asked Mr. Connelly about the piece of machinery that
was outside of the building.
-2-
_ _ .... _.__ ... _ .... ~ _ _ ...___.__,_._.__~ ..... _ , ... _ . _ __ ~~ __ _ , ... _ _ _ .. _ ._ _. __ r . _.
