Mr. Cox addressed the Commission stating that the office center will
be used primarily by large companies. He stated that when design
efforts began in talking with the City officials, one of the things
that they heard was 'anything you can do to alleviate expansive
asphalt parking would be welcome'...and that they have approached
that problem and have come up with, what they believe, is a workable
solution. He further indicated the larger cars are being discon-
tinued as model lines in the future years and that when you consider
this problem will be phased over five/eight years or more depending
on the overall economics, there will be sufficient parking. Van
pooling, he indicated is successful in San Francisco. He spoke to
the Golden Gate Transit and said they bought vans and turned them
over to people who received preferential parking in the City. He
explained the Marin County commuters to San Francisco which leas been
very successful.
Conunissioner Doherty addressed van pooling. He stated he understands
the San Francisco situation but who uses van pooling in Pleasanton
will depend on who occupies the buildings on the north side of town.
Mr. Cox indicated that if 12 employees are working in one of these
buildings there could be 10 who would most likely commute by van.
Mr. Fisher used Flour Corporation in Irvine as an excellent example
of van pooling. He indicated the area was similar.
Commissioner Jamieson stated that he thought the success of van pooling
would depend on who rents the buildings and that the developer can't
do too much to entourage it. He further indicated that the companies
cited as examples are large companies and that of many large companies
in San Francisco not too many have car pools. He indicated a more
practical approach would be bus service.
Chairperson Getty indicated that there have been 'van pool requirements'
in conditions of approval for other north Pleasanton projects.
Mr. Cox addressed their parking proposal. Mr. Warnick asked 'w7iat
percentage of parking do you end up with for small cars?' Mr. Fisher
indicated their proposed system uses roughly 50g for the office
center area.
Commissioner Lindsey stated that assuming parking is kept as proposed
for this portion of the project, he asked if the parking would be
somewhat short. Mr. Harris epxlained the City's parking requirements
of one per 300 sq. ft.
Commissioner Wilson asked Mr. Rockhold to explain each one of the
buildings on the model. Mr. Rockhold explained. Commissioner Wilson
then asked the site of the large office buildings. It was said that
all six buildings totalled 855,000 sq. ft. and that the land area is
30.1 acres.
-3-
,. .,
