Ms Bengtson defined both neighborhood and
community parks. She stated that a neighborhood park is generally
five acres+ but the City does have a 230-acre park (Walter.
Johnson) included in the overall 516.3 acres worth of parks
for the City. She also stated that a group of homeowners
in the Oakhill park area have asked the Park and Recreation
Commission to consider a pathway from their homes to Foothill
Road. She said the developer will put in the pathway to provide
access to the park. Muirwood community park is scheduled for
work in the near future. She stated that the City has no
bathroom facilities at any of the parks except Sports Park..
She also stated that a sod bank
is at the Sports Park, lighting will be provided also. She
said the Park and Recreation Commission has a few concerns
they would like expressed; 1) encourage park land in the Vintage
Hills area. They like to think that a neighborhood park should
be no more than one-half mile from homes and they feel very
strongly about this; 2) vehicle access from Sports. Park from
the east. Ms. Bengtson indicated there are another 18 acres
of land to be developed at this park and development will depend
on vehicular access. Commissioner Getty asked if Ms. Bengtson
was referring to Suttergate. Ms. Bengtson answered, 'not necessarily'
and that the general plan subcommittee supported a path off
of West Las Positas to the City Council and that Park and Recreation
Commission would be supportive of some sort of study to analyze
the situation. There is a need to get residents from Santa
Rita Road to the Park other than going all of the way to Hopyard
Road to the park. Commissioner Lindsey asked about a bridge
over the Arroyo. Ms. Bengtson stated that the general plan
review subcommittee suggested a bike path. She stated the
Park and Recreation Commission has concerns with the industrial
growth of the City as it relates to intercompany softball games
and other sports. They are currently looking on how to accommodate
them. They are also looking at picnic facilities.
Chairman Wilson was impressed with Ms. Bengtson's report. He
said he had no idea we had so many parks. Ms. Bengtson then
reported that the Century House is being redecorated and renovated
with the help of the Childrens' Hospital Branch and other groups.
She stated the public is cordially invited to come and participate
in activities to be held there to acknowledge the excellent
work volunteered by local construction laborers, craftspeople
and designers; Saturday, September 10, Champagne Preview;
Sunday-Saturday, September 11-17 Designer Showcase Tours; and
Sunday, September 18 Box Lunch Special. She urged everyone
to purchase tickets for this event.
Chairman Jamieson announced that Commissioner Wilson should
be commended for donating the house as well as his efforts
and support in the construction of the City Council Chambers.
__..._. ... _......... _. ..........
